1881 is free to view - on familysearch and elsewhere. Transcripts not images.

Also freecen are transcribing census, but I've never used it so don't know what the coverage is like.

Your local library will probably have an Ancestry Library licence you can access although you may have to book a computer.

Register with Ancestry for a free two week trial, you will need a cc but if you cancel before the free period runs out you will not be charged , you can do a lot of searches in that time.

You don't get much for free when it comes to family history research but if you get stuck put up a call for help, everyone is really keen to assist.

It also depends what area you are looking for as some of the family history sites have transcripts of the census for their area.
