The next thing to do is to check out the cemetery in the place where they died

You could contact the deaths/burial department of the local Registrar for the area.
They should have details of which cemetary people are buried in.
Be warned though - some are more helpful than others!!

Southampton is very helpful - gave me maps with the graves highlighted of people who had died 80 odd years ago. Unfortunately in one burial ground, as you only 'own' a plot for 30 years in the area, both graves had been reused.

But, in a different burial ground in Southampton, I found (with the help of maps again) the graves of ancestors buried over 100 years ago.

Just realised my late brother in law will be hard to find.
He was buried - but in a woodland grave about 5 miles from where he lived. The graves aren't marked - (they will give you a map) but one tree looks very much like another - especially in winter!! LOL

Have to admit to visiting his grave - only to find out later it was the wrong one!!

It could be harder for generations to come to find where people are as some people have their ashes in an urn and others have them scattered from a special place.

The answers will be blowing in the wind.
