Children in Need total hits £20.3m

Newsreader Fiona Bruce performing during the Children in Need appeal night The BBC Children in Need appeal total has passed the £20 million mark after a galaxy of stars turned out for the television extravaganza. The £20,309,747 haul at the end of the telethon was just short of the amount raised at the same stage last year. Featuring performances from Peter Andre, Stereophonics and Alison Moyet as well as a troupe of newsreaders performing a Beyonce routine, host Terry Wogan described the night as "fantastic". Bringing the 30th Children in Need appeal to a close, Wogan, flanked by co-hosts Alesha Dixon and Tess Daly, urged Britons to help beat last year's record-breaking £38 million total - when more than £21 million had been raised on the night.
The veteran broadcaster said: "Another fantastic fundraising effort. We didn't get quite to £21 million but we got pretty close. When we give you the full total in a couple of months' time, I bet it will be pretty close to what we made last year." Earlier in the night, BBC newsreaders Kate Silverton, Susanna Reid, Sophie Raworth and Fiona Bruce swapped pinstriped suits for bling as they performed Beyonce's hits Crazy In Love and Single Ladies. Silverton said later: "It was so out of our comfort zone, but it was worth it." Adrian Chiles joined fellow presenters from The One Show for a gaudy rendition of Fame. Another unlikely sight was the Dragons' Den team donning hard hats and overalls to help renovate a Children in Need community centre in London. Peter Kay had got the evening under way with his charity single. Under the name The Animated All Star Band, the track features more than 100 characters from children's shows down the ages. A sneak preview of the Doctor Who Christmas episode and a special performance from the stars of Strictly Come Dancing also kept people tuning in. A special edition of Lark Rise to Candleford saw Sir Terry make a guest appearance at the village Post Office. The show was graced by a string of musical performances, including efforts from the EastEnders' cast with a Motown celebration.
I don't think I saw a mention of this when it was on, did anyone watch it? I thought the newsreaders and Diversity worked well together and lots of it was very entertaining, especially John Barrowman singing in his underpants lol, what legs and what a waste!
I recorded the concert from the night before but sadly managed to delete it in error, if anyone has it on dvd recorder and could copy it to a disc for me I would be so grateful

Now this is the sort of thing I wish stupid BBC Canada would broadcast for us here. I know who the cast of East Enders are! Watched it on US public television for years, then more recently (and more recent, but still 4 yrs behind) on BBC Canada, and they do air Lark Rise to Candleford here (also on US public television).
No, we get more and more dumb unoriginal house-decorating and debtridden-couple shows ... Well, at least we get Graham Norton. ;) Funniest thing on television these days!
Oh, and Doctor Who cast members too.

... looking for video on line ...
Search for Children in Need at youtube and there are lots of clips of different bits, fortunately.
(Good grief, I recognize about two people in the East Enders cast!! Where I'm at, the hideous boring storyline of the affair between Max and Stacey ended last week- May 2007 real time, so I'm only 30 months behind ...)
Congratulations to all on the success.

Hi Janey, well I am sure you would recognise more of the cast if you could watch it properly. What a shame you couldn't see the programme. The Eastenders part was good, and I had fun picking out the people in 'real life' especially the younger members of the cast. There is one girl who has just gone off to Oxford uni, and is shown as a studious girl with glasses (of course!) and pulled back hair, but in real life with her hair loose and wearing a little eye make up etc, she is very much more attractive.
The newsreaders and Diversity were very good too altho the Lark Rise offering was a bit dull. I loved that series as it helped me relate to the way my father's family would have lived, it was set in the same area and my late Great Grandfather and Great uncle were stone masons, as was Robert Timmins in the dramatisation around the same time. In fact between Robert Timms, the real father of the authoress, and my Great Grandfather there were only 8 years difference in age and 3 miles in their home villages so it is very possible and probable that they might well have worked on the same buildings at times. My G.Grandfather and Uncle worked on Liverpool Cathedral which I visited earlier this year, and many other similar buildings around the country so could well have worked for the same company even. At that time my G. Grandmother and her daughters would have been lace making outside the houses, in daytime, and inside if they were really hard up, in the evenings so that people didn't see the need for them to continue working, usually by candlelight which often caused sight problems in later life.
You can get both series of Lark Rise on dvd for a fairly reasonable price on Amazon, about £15 each series instead of the £25 I saw each in a local shop. Maybe you could get Santa to deliver you the dvds Janey.

You can watch the concert on BBC iplayer Liz...however no doubt the BBC will be fetching it out on DVD soon.
I especially love watching the newsreaders strutting their stuff...do you remember the Rocky Horror Show and Chicago. They are on YouTube and I have them in my favourites...great for a laugh!

I spotted Lucy and Phil's devil child and the guy who works at the garage, and that was about it! There are several EastEnders numbers combined at that youtube link. I'm going to go back and look for more -- will look for that presenters one. Won't recognize them, but that doesn't matter. ;)
