O.h. said the other day he had some audio cassettes that he wanted to transfer to cds, especially some of music his son recorded and his comments etc, then he could send them to him in N.Y., and also lots of his own preferred music.

I spotted the above gadget in a tv mag and wonder if anyone has one, and could give a report on it? Works out about £25.90 so don't want to waste my money if it is no good.

Thanks

Lizx

There is a program, called "Audacity" that can be used to transfer music and also to "Clean-up- audio prior to re-recording to cd etc.
only thing is, they MUST be saved on the PC as .WAV files.

Hi Liz
Audacity, that Bob refers to, can be downloaded for free. I used it earlier this year for something different, it took me a while to work out the instructions, but it was absolutely brilliant once I worked it out.
Otherwise have a snoop about on download.com, search for "cassette to mp3", there's quite a few options, with reviews too.
Good luck

Hi Duncan,
I have this "Plan"

to record all my damaged (clicky) 12in Lp's and clean em up using Audacity

But am finding it difficult to get started, there is always something " more important" to do........

I had the same plan Bob. It fell apart when I realised I had nothing to play them on in the first place!

That's something else o.h. wanted to do, put all his old LPs onto cd and he was planning to buy something for that too.
I will show him this thread tomorrow, thanks for your help so far.

Liz, thinking back when I first got a computer, I did actually copy 3 or 4 old records before the record player died, the programme was by Roxio, I think it was called CD creator. It cleaned things up nicely, and produced CD's ok, it did take forever to do, but it did work.

Thanks Duncan, this particular thing copies audio tapes which is what he was asking me about before I saw the gadget.

Shy, thank you so much for your vote of confidence lol

Have a good day everyone, I am just off to bed in a mo!

Liz, I got the the name wrong, it's not Roxio, it's called Steinberg Clean 4.0
I found the disc today by mistake, looking for something else, if you fancy trying it, pm me your address, I'll send it to you.
You need a lead connecting your stereo to your PC (jackplug to jackplug), you can then play vinyl or a cassette which records on your pc in mp3 format. Clean then gets rid of all the crackles and what have you, then you can burn it onto disc.

I will let you know soon.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 29 Nov 2009 04:18

I am so annoyed, was going to buy o.h. that gadget for Christmas.

The other day his son called him to ask what he wanted - son is going to work abroad next week for six weeks, still owes him a birthday and Father's day gift but heyho, that's typical of the family.
What does o.h. do but suggest the gadget I had spoken about, he knew I was going to get it if it was what he wanted. He looked on line and found something a bit more expensive but does a bit more, so asked his son for that, which is unusual as he doesn't ask his sons for anything too dear as a rule. They never think of anything by themselves and have sometimes asked me for suggestions which I have given. The son in N.Y. won't be sending gifts again as as usual he is skint, he can't get a work permit yet - he thought by getting married to the girl he went to stay with it would automatically allow him to work! Paperwork seems to be taking a long time.
Anyway so now I am stuck with no ideas what to get o.h. - he said he didn't think I could afford the more complicated item - so how come he hasn't realised how much I have spent on him at other Christmases and birthdays to make sure he has presents to open etc when his sons don't bother ( and not just boxed of chocolate cos he can't think of things which is what he does for me!)
Oh well Santa won't have to stop long at this address will he?

Lizx

Duncan, thanks for the offer, I had asked if he wanted me to get you to loan your gadget but seems he had already told his son what he wanted. Shame he didn't bother to tell me!

That is so annoying !!!
Why don't you do what we do we agree not to buy each other a present.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 30 Nov 2009 02:08

But if we did that Sue, we would have nothing much to open, lol O.h. has the present from his son which he already knows about, and I know what he told his son to buy me so not a surprise. Will have a pressie from my son and that's all, my brothers don't bother with us since my son got older - might get a card but they live their own lives - and since I got involved with o.h. have lost touch with lots of my friends, not that we could afford to buy pressies for each other anyway. Might get something from a charity shop from his father and stepmother, and that's about it. His sisters don't get him presents either and my older friends have died now and no relatives that do presents, only a couple of cousins left now that I am in touch with. A right miserable lot eh?
I know I have got a box of chocs to come from o.h., his usual standby, cos I saw them when he came in from the supermarket. Last year because he hadn't got much for me, he got me 5 different boxes of chocs lol so I had things to open! Now he is diabetic so I mustn't get him any sweets as he eats them at once, doesn't eke them out which would be ok.
Can't buy a joint present for the house as it is his house, not mine (his attitude)
One year I found a lovely plant left outside my own house when I called round to pick up mail, sent from someone I had befriended on this board. The delivery people got a rocket as it showed I was away and could have been there all Christmas, I only realised when I read the card put through the door and by then I had gone to my son's so had to go back and pick up the plant from near the fence, it was dark so I hadn't noticed it on my earlier visit. When I got home I stood it on the kitchen windowsill while I quickly got dinner. It was a plant in it's plastic pot stuck into a tall black china vase (very poorly presented and would have died if I had left it outside) He went ballistic and said it blocked his view from the window and caused a row over it which spoiled Christmas Eve. So you see he doesn't make it easy to get anything anyway as there isn't much room in this house, it's really small.

Think i will go and eat worms! Roll on Easter!

I did get a couple of longsleeved tshirts for him a few weeks ago so he will have one surprise and I did hint at the Susan Boyle cd so maybe he will remember to get it. He is so dozy, he said Which one is it? as if he has never heard of Subo and didn't know she has one cd out! It's hard work here lol
