im trying to find the record of my g grandfather john henry wakely joining the army in ww1to no avail.i have found the record of his medals but nothing else.if anyone has any other ideas about where else to look i would be very grateful.

I presume youv'e been looking on Ancestry?

If they're not on there then they probably didn't survive. Many WW1 records were lost to enemy bombing and a fire in WW2.

My own grandfather's records didn't make it but my husband's granddad's are there.

Reading them, his granddad would probably set fire to them himself. He was a bit of a lad; in fights, drunk a lot of the time! Bless him!

I'll have a look for you in case you've missed him.

EDIT: Had a look but couldn't find him, I'm afraid.

Hi, about the only chance you have now, you have his medal index card, from that you’ll have his regiment and number, is to try and contact his regiment, you may find on line a contact email or address, not easy but worth a try.
