Christina - the "black" and "Colour" buttons on your 3in1 are COPIER function buttons only - nothing to do with scanning. Their function is to print wot you've put under the lid in same manner you'd copy a document/pic on an office copier.

When you scan via your PC you have to tell it wot it is you are scanning so it can use appropriate parts of software. ie If I'm scanning an old black and white pic from the 60s I have to tell it to use "Grayscale" and that it's a pic and I have to title it, plus if I wish I can play about with the brightness, contrast etc.

Hope this helps. Ron

What would be the point of scanning if you dont want to save the result? I think you probably must always need to do it through the computer. I spent ages wondering why my printer would not print, until I remembered that I hadnt pressed the black or colour buttons!

Mine has to scan on the pc as well... I spent ages trying to make it scan by pressing the buttons on the scanner/printer/copier, all to no avail, but its ok if I do it through the pc. (why, though ?)

Not quite sure wot you mean.

I can use my 3 in 1 as a COPIER without the PC being booted up is that your problem area?

If I want to scan and save any item then I have to work from the PC and tell it to scan the item I've 'put under the lid' and then I save it to "My Pics" initially. Is that your problem area?
