What a wonderful day yesterday
I went to bed early on Sunday knowing we had an EARLY start so when I looked at the alarm and it read 5.23 I decided to get up make the coffee, get my make-up on and do hair. Wonderful all went perfect 1st time. Then Got puzzled because the 5.30 alarm hadn't gone off so I checked the clock to see it was only 2.39. Left the coffee, took make-up off and crawled back in to bed for another 2 an half hours. 5.30 dragged myself out of bed, fell over OH and mutts, managed make-up, gave up on hair finished packing mutt bags for their seperate days away. By 6.15 we were ready to drop the dogs at their respective sitters and get on the road for 6.30.
We made it to Alicante port by 8.15 and after a wrong turn and 3 security checks found the Saga Rose and Mum.
1st stop was COFFEE and breakfast, well it was there ! We spent the time until lunch swopping presents and catching up on the last 5 years. I came home with much more than I started with. Also OH and myself went for a wander around the ship whilst Mum had a little nap. The afternoon went very quickly as we had to leave the ship by 4.30 for them to sail at 5pm but we did manage to fit in a quick quiz and a natter with Mum's 'friend'. We had thought to take advantage of our dog free state and go out for a meal in the evening but both of us decided that we had eaten too much already, and by the time we got home we would have been missing for 16 hrs. It was time to head home and pick up our errant animals, climb into my new silk PJ's and relax my head on a pillow !
The Cruise Ship. Saga Rose goes into retirement after this cruise, but it is still a stunning ship. I was amazed at the level of service onboard so much so that I want to win the lottery and spend a life time cruising. Something that I am trying to talk my Mum into doing. The cuisine is wonderful and the choice is beyond imagination, even afternoon tea ( which we declined) is laid out like a banquet and would spoil any sweet tooth person with the array of cakes, cookies and sandwiches, all made onboard. Mum and Bruce regaled us with stories of cabin parties which included Tom O'Conner and Terry Waites to name a couple of their guests. Such a civilized life style. Even down to the cabin attendant making sure that Mum knew her cleaning had arrived safely in her cabin, unlocking the door for her as she approached it and on the whole pampering her. I have to say that Mum is a seasoned traveller on the Saga Rose having now completed 11 round the world trips and a few short cruises thrown in, so her whims and preferences are well known with the regular crew, and they do spoil her.
The downside of the day was seeing how frail and immobile Mum has got these days and this was confirmed by OH telling me that it wouldn't be wise to leave it another 5 years before I see her again as he doubts that she will make that long. Pah ! she'll out live us all, but I did notice that her short term memory has deteriorated drasticly and her mobilty is down to sticks on a good day. When even a sleeping tortoise would win the race.
Still she enjoyed seeing her 'precious' daughter and loved introducing me around, even better she adored have her very attentive son-in-law with her. and yes I feel guilty at leaving it so long since I last saw her !
Ahh and back to reality my mutts has just wiped her b*m on the doormat ....Thanks Minx !

Glad you had a great day with your mom Uzzi. We are off to UK tomorrow to do the mamouth tour round UK to visit our family and a few good friends thrown in for good measure. My mom is 86 and has been to Spain 3 times this year and my sister has decided that next April - tickets already booked - she will be over here again for 2 weeks. Will be seeing her a week on Sunday for a couple of days before flying back to Spain. Bet we come back knackered !!!! Love Mary xx

Mary ..it's cold over there ! mind the chill is setting in here now lol I've packed away the shorts and dug the fleecy trackies out now. My mum has threatened to come and visit but always elected to go off with Saga in the end and I have to admit after seeing the way she was looked after I can't blame her one bit. Also it gives her company and playmates. If she comes here I couldn't give her the 24-7 that she would want, what with OH working and mutts who are demanding also.
have fun in the UK with your family. WRAP UP WARM !

Good morning Uzzi.
What a lovely thread to start the day at GR and to read of your visit to see your mum. Saga Rose does sound like a wonderful cruise ship and with a good recommendation too. I've often thought about going on a cruise, and seeing how many times your mum has travelled on one,has now made me keen to go. Can I be cheeky and say please don't leave it too long when seeing your mum again as those days are soo precious and time flies so quickly. x
Have a great UK trip Mary seeing family and friends.......sometimes knackered is good! :O)
Mau xxx
edit......see by last post Uzzi your mum is a plucky lady, hope she enjoys many more years having fun x

Mau Telling me not to leave it so long is not being cheeky at all.
Mum loves travelling and has been cruising each year for the last 13/14 years 11 of those with Saga. She is already booked on the Saga Ruby for Jan next year as The Rose retires. She did go to Africa with a Saga holiday earlier this year (hence not coming out to me ) but does love the cruise ships better.
I would certainly recommend it to anybody, OH who hasn't yet arrived at the Saga age would look for a different cruise line, but I couldn't help but marvel at the staff care on the Rose. and ofcourse the entertainment is set for them ( even if they did get energetic and Cha-cha in the ballroom ! ) That also includes the offshore trips. I was surprised to hear some lady say that the crew had advised them not to go ashore alone, Hey this is Alicante, but as OH said these are vunerable people ( Hah some would put me to shame ! ) and they are getting off a cruise ship which to many may seem rich pickings.
My advice is if you have thought about a cruise certainly go ahead and book it.
