From our local council newsletter.

A new change in the law which came into force recently now means that low income families are entitled to more money through their council tax and housing benefit .
There are two major changes affecting people with children and the over 60s.

Previously when calculating benefits, Child Benefit was taken into account as income. Now it will not be classed as income so could mean an increase of just over £28 a week.

The second change means that if you are aged 60 or over the amount of savings you can have before it affects your benefits entitlement has been increased from £6000 to £10000b which means that more people will be entitled to claim benefits without their savings being taken into account.

Probably if you were already claiming benefits, things will have been updated for you but if you were not claiming before it might be worth applying now.
