A bit of a controversial subject I know but my 15 year old has to write a discursive essay on the death penalty. I would appreciate any opinions on this view with your reasons behind them

I am against the Death Penalty(I think) as there have been so many cases where it has been proven that the person/s were in fact innocent.
On the other hand There are certain people who are so evil and it is sure they have committed (the crime) then I am for it.

Don't forget to consider the financial issues. In the US, death penalty cases cost about 3 times cost of imprisoning someone in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years.

I can rember my daughter having to do the same topic at school and write her views etc

Im for it if proved via DNA etc that no miscarriage of justice can take place it is an eye for an eye.................

However my daughter was against it and said that should be made to suffer - not prison as we know it - but back to the chain gang and hard labour etc

Rather than give him an opinion…unless he wants to conduct a survey, try to get him to list pros and cons.

Consider if a Death Penalty would act as a deterrent. What crimes should be covered by it? Is the execution of the wrongly convicted worth the price of executing the guilty? Would the victims (or relatives of victims) prefer a quick death or for the person to ‘rot in hell’ for the rest of their lives?

I have to admit I am for it and this is where the problem lies my daughter does not think that anybody has the right to take another human life no matter what. So trying to help her put her views accross is not easy

Oh to be young again and look at the world through rose coloured spectacles

Diane for the mention I agree totally - a death the same his 3 year old victim suffered should be what he gets

Sorry if the above offends but last night I was reduced to tears listening what he did and how that little girl suffered due to his evilness

I don't agree with the death penalty. It's been proved over and over that it isn't a deterrent. A lifetime in jail is a more fitting punishment. Death is a quick and easy way out and a blessing at times for the offender. Regardless of how people feel about the "luxury" of today's jails the biggest thing is loss of freedom. Colour television and comfortable cells do not make up for the fact that you are still behind locked bars.

hmmm. Not sure how I feel about this one personally. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

However, if the alternative is a long time in prison - then why do they need comfortable cells, colour TVs etc? Why not a bit of hardship?

Usually, someone is in prison for having deprived someone else of something - their life, a loved one, possessions, money ... so surely they should be deprived of something too? I know they're behind bars but do they have to be comfortable? Wouldn't that be a BIT of a deterrent?

As she has to discuss the subject DET has the right idea, especially as she is so much against it. She need to detach her feelings from the issue and talk around all the pros and cons. She could then finish by saying that she personally is against it and say why.
