on bbc2 did anyone watch it? I recorded it and watched it just a while ago.

I knew things weren't brilliant in the homes but there is so much needs to be done to improve things for patients, might as well stick people in a room and leave them to themselves for all the help some of them got. I would have forty fits if I had a relly there and saw the programme. The attitude of the 'new' Manager was scandalous, it's obvious there is no love or care for the work there, from the owners or some of the staff, the owners are just out to make as fast a buck as possible and the staff are demoralised and untrained. I hope Gordon Brown watched it and saw what is happening, he will be old one day!
It scared me that I could end up somewhere like that one day, so I will tell my son that if things seem that bad that I am stuck in a chair and ignored, not helped to feed myself if I can't do it, then he might as well give me a load of pills and let me finish things off.
It's no way to treat our elderly, they don't ask to have dementia and need better provision.

Hi Gerri, thanks - I have seen too many people in homes that don't seem to care much about the mental health of their 'inmates' i do hope I don't end up in one!

Hope you are ok Gerri

Yes, Liz, it is dreadful and scary. Scandalous and other such words are not adequate.

I don't intend to hi-jack your post so I will post another, showing the other side of the coin.

Barbra, I am sorry you had bad experiences for your loved one - glad that to some extent the people who could have helped things get better, got their punishment but it doesn't help your poor Dad, bless him.

It sounds odd but I am glad that my Mum died quickly from her third heart attack, altho she hadn't had great quality of life for some time, she was still in her own home among her things and good neighbours and was aware of everything and coping pretty well till the end. Dad had lung cancer, so a lot of pain and sadness but he only spent a short time in a hospice for respite care and was at home till two days before he died when he was sedated anyway so hardly knew he was back in the hospice and was well cared for to the end and after, treated with dignity and kindness.
thanks LW will read your thread now

I know there are good places that are kindness itself but so sad to see it's the luck of the draw or down to money where you can leave your loved ones to the care or lack of care of others. Must be awful for those with no one to fight their corner or family living too far away to visit and see the situation.
