When I visited England in 1997 I saw several grey ones, but the only red one I saw was lying on the road on his back with his tummy in the sun - dead.

Mick, you can keep your possums, horrid creatures they are, ruining our bush. I have helped to dispatch quite a few of them - nasty creature you will now think me. They also rob the nests of our endangered Kokako. B***** Aussie overstayers. Please come and take them all home with you.

Huia.

Dont like them ....the little sod's vandalise my bird feeders. I gave up feeding the birds early this year as the squirrels were happily robbing the feeders

It has to be Red one's. They are so cute. When we lived in Germany the nearby Tierpark (Zoo) they had 2 white squirrels they were so adorable.

I used to live in Formby and we visited the "squirrel reserve" regularly. Formby residents are on "grey" watch and have to report any sightings of them to the rangers. The Formby by -pass even has a couple of rope bridges over the dual carriageway to allow the reds to cross safely!!.

Where I live in North Wales we only have greys although I believe the is a reserve for reds on Anglesey.

I like both, but the red ones are the prettiest.

The red ones have more hair in their ears too Monty.....do yours? lol

Go to Formby Point north of Liverpool if you want to see Red Squirrels. The National Trust own a small wood right on the coast where they live. Entry is free to NT members, but charges are low I think and you can buy nuts to feed them. It is nice to walk through the woods anyway and we often do a detour to see them if we are up that way.

See this http://www.redsquirrels.info/formby_squirrels.html and the link for more info.

I was only thinking the other day, what was my best ever Christmas pressie, yea when I was 11 got my first Air Rifle, and that was it, the greatest pressie I ever got, used to spend hours and hours around the fields hunting.

i think i'm right in saying that in the 50s 60s the only animal/birds that where protected was the Swans and game birds.

i remember when i was a young lad, the gamekeppers used to shoot them on sight then hang them up as a warning to others, but not to sure if the others understood that, Magpies, Jays, Crows and many more where shot and hung up around the woods.

I've only ever seen reds on TV.

There are a couple of greys that occasionally appear around here. Don't let that ..........."I look cute sitting on my hunches eating nuts"......fool you.

The pesky things dig up bulbs & pot plants, chase birds from the feeder & raid eggs from nests.

:o)
