I have a friend, well she was my Mum's friend from her school days, and then I went to school with her son and we lived fairly close to each other and so I have stayed in touch with her, she is now in her 80s
She was widowed and left with a daughter, remarried and had three sons, one of whom was killed on his way back from a holiday in Cornwall at the age of 18. That was many years ago.
In 1998 her son who was the same age as me, my school pal, took his own life when his second marriage ran into difficulties and he was left on his own, aged 51. He never had children. Since then this lady has lost her husband too and has suffered many health problems yet with the help of her remaining son and many grandchildren has managed to cope alone in her home she has lived in since 1950ish! Her daughter fell out with her a long time ago and ignores her, but her children do lots for my friend and always have.
I received a Christmas card the other day saying that she has been in and out of hospital this year and is waiting to go in to have her foot and part of her leg amputated. I know she has had problems with that leg for a while now, I think she might be diabetic so maybe something to do with that. This meant this was the first November she couldn't go with a granddaughter, to put flowers on her son's grave at the local crematorium. There was no hint of 'poor me' in her message and she takes everything on the chin.
It just doesn't seem fair that such a brave lady should have yet more pain and worry and I am not sure how she will cope in her home unless she has lots of help.
Makes me feel humble really, at least I can get around even if slowly and not always when I want to, but her attitude is amazing. She is always so friendly and kind.
Please send her your positive thoughts - I wil call her today and find out when the op is to be.

Thinking of your friend Liz, at least she will be warm and looked after in hospital, I think of folk who are on their own and especially with the cold weather...I dont think I would last long outside with no home comforts, makes you realise how fortunate we are....how are you coping with this cold stuff? did you manage to get your A***s stuff? will talk to you later ...
