my Mum got a shock, first she knew a "policeman " holding her purse was standing in her hall way, of course it was a con.and he just left without taking anything , but had it gone the other way , well I dread to think

She has a garden bench under her bedroom window, and leaves the small window open, it didn't take much effort to reach in turn the key and open the large window and climb in.
I try explaining to her NOT to leave the window key in the lock, put it out of reach.
So PLEASE hide you keys.

I can remember my grandfather locking himself out of his bungalow back in the 1980's.

A Policeman took 10 seconds, using a credit card, to open the double glazed front door.

................ ............ ........... .......... ......... .......... .

Seeing various threads regarding tea leaving recently has prompted me to post this thread.

I live in Essex, and since the summer there have been frequent break ins to homes & cars. Never before in my 17 years of living here, have there been so many.

This is advice given to residents by our local community bobbies

What not many people know is, if you have a double glazed door,
if it isn't double locked it CAN be opened by a burglar very easily.
This happened to a neighbour the other weekend

Of a night pulling the handle up alone from inside will not double lock your door despite people being led to believe it does.

. Burglars can access your home with the help from a screwdriver, credit card type thing or the like to these doors if unlocked & just closed.

You MUST lift the handle & double lock it with a key
Do this every time you go out, and before bedtime.

Remember to take the key out of the lock & put it nearby out of sight as this can be accessed via a window or letterbox.

Make sure the whole family know where this key is, and have several spares if need be in case of a fire & the need for quick exit.

Put car keys out of sight, many break ins are by thief's who want to steal your car, and they know people drop their keys on the nearest thing to the front door, or keep them on a key holder.

Also ladies, take your handbag / purse upstairs when you go to bed. Leave another less loved bag downstairs with an old purse with a few coins in. If someone does get in they will resist the urge to look for another purse or bag in the house. This is a tip given to my elderly neighbour by our community police.

If you do go out, leave a light on in your living room. & shut your curtains. Many people go out & leave their landing/passage light on but this invites burglars, as who sits in total darkness in their living room & leaves their passage light on ???

When you do go out. Leave a radio on, preferably one which chats like Talk sport or the like. Put it at the volume you would normally have it if you were in.

Hope this helps someone x
