the going rate is, do you reckon? I gave them £1.00 for half a verse of "Away in David's City" (I kid you not, lol!!) and then a half hearted rendering of "we wish you a merry Christmas",,, not "Glad Tidings we bring", or anything, just "we wish you a merry Christmas"

They looked at me as though I was Ebenezer Scrooge reincarnated!!

Last year, we had our tyres slashed, and didn't notice until hubby was about to rush me in to hospital..... good thing we have two cars, even if the second was illegal (no MOT)... and I reckon it was cos hubby made them sing two whole carols before giving them a £1.00, lol!!

I forget what I used to get - my mum always told the neighbours to give us sweets instead of money - but when I was 12 or so, a group of three friends and I (plus a few smaller siblings!) went round carol singing and made about £15. We did quite a few houses, a couple of us took recorders and one of my friends took her flute round - think we gave the money to charity, though.

Kate, we used to do that as well, with the youth club... but if a gang of us went of our own accord, we'd be made to sing a good few carols for our money..... and if we were rude, it always got back to our mothers... not me, I was never ever rude, but one of the girls up the road was, she was terrible, lolol I hated being cold, so tended not to bother, lolol!!

Wmsl @ Hayley and Stray, lolol!!

Mummo, I am fine if they even knew one verse... but they had their songs all muddled up as well, lolol....... I felt sorry for them, so gave them a £1 thinking I was doing them a favour, lol.... but I think they were expecting rather a lot more!! They got 50p each for about 15 seconds of work... if you multiplied that.... it adds up to a darned sight more than the minimum wage, .... and they were only about 10!!

Anyone coming out carol singing with me? lolol!!

Love

Blue Moon Report 14 Dec 2009 20:15

(Sung to the tune "Jingle Bells")

Dashing through the snow in my rusty Chevrolet.
Down the road I go, sliding all the way.
I need new piston rings. I need some new snow tires.
My car is held together by a piece of chicken wire!

Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, the door just blew away.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.
Oh, what fun it is to drive this rusty Chevrolet!

I went to IGA to get some Christmas cheer.
I just passed up my left front tire and it's gettin' hard to steer.
Speeding down the highway, right past the county cops.
I have to drag my swampers just to get the car to stop.

Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, the door just blew away.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.
Oh, what fun it is to drive this rusty Chevrolet!

Bouncing through the snowdrifts in a big, blue cloud of smoke.
People laugh as I drive by; I wonder what's the joke!
I have to get to Wal-Mart to pick up my layaway,
Cause Santa's comin' soon in his big, old, rusty sleigh!

Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, the door just blew away.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.
Oh, what fun it is to drive this rusttttttttty Chevroooooooleeeeeet!

Depends how many there are and how well they sing (and if I hear them). Sometimes 50p, rarely £1 but they don't seem to expect more. we don't normally get that many and can 'vet' them via the camera that throws them up on the TV.

they don't seem to sing carols any more - Jingle Bells and We wish you a Merry Christmas are not carols so they get nothing!!!!

I ask them if they know any carols and they haven't a clue what I am on about - I suggest a few carols - Silent Night, Away in a Manger, While Shepherds watched, but blank faces!!

Generally I don't open the door after dark anyway
