Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 28 Dec 2009 21:22

We were a home, -no party, just family here.
At midnight we went outside and neighbours brought out a tray of glasses of bubbly and we toasted in the New Year while watching fireworks from the surrounding area.

I remember that some friends had arranged to see in the dawn on the Channel coast, so my daughter, grandson and I got up early and went to the sea front to wait for sunrise. I was disappointed that there was no visible sun, just a gradual lightening of the sky, as we looked across towards France, but it was a nice way to see in the first light of the new year.

Persephone Report 28 Dec 2009 21:39

Over here in NZ it was a miserable wet night - cell phones were a fairly recent thing and I don't think we could text then. One of my daughters was in the city having a whale of a time partying (and ringing me) and the other daughter, SIL two grandies and OH and myself were on top of one of our little hills called Mt Eden with a lot of other silly bods - supposedly to watch the firework displays which one would normally see from there. But it was so overcast - dully and black looking we could not even see our Sky Tower let alone see any fireworks. All very dull and boring - may as well have stayed home and watched the tele.

I watched the coming of the New Millennium on the Telly.
Was that when the Queen did Auld Langs ...and didn't cross her arms?
BBC did quite a few good programmes.
It's amazing how quickly the last ten years have gone

Huia Report 28 Dec 2009 22:22

As far as I am concerned, 31 Dec 1999 did NOT mark the end of a millenium. There was no year 0. So the great majority of people were celebrating a year too early. But having said that, I was a part of the choir which celebrated the non-millenium in the Auckland Domain. It was a great evening, even if we did get soaked. At interval we came off the stage and stood around in groups and a man came up behind me and tickled me in the ribs. I thought it must be somebody I knew so I turned around, and the look of utter horror on his face was quite funny when he realised he didnt know me. He kept apologising, even though I assured him I had lots of doubles. I think he was worried I might sue him for sexual harrasment, or some such thing! I even assured him that he had 'made my night' as it is not every night that a strange man tickles me in the ribs (perhaps he thought I was hoping he would go further!)

The tableau included a couple of Moa with their chick, and a giant weta.

At the end of the 2nd millenium there were no celebrations. I just thought about it to myself.

Huia, who can count.

Sorry, hitting wrong buttons and posted twice.

Perse, how dare you call Mount Eden a little hill? For the benefit of the Poms on here, it is one of our iconic volcanoes, of which Auckland has many, hopefully all extinct, although there is always the possibility of another one popping up.

Huia.

Dear All

Hello

Thank you very much for your replies.

Its great to see a snapshot of how people celebrated.

Penny, London seemed to be at a standstill.

Yes, Patricia, the Queen did not cross her arms over at the millienium dome do! This was debated in the newspapers!
I remember Prince Philip kissing her cheek. They looked very happy.

The BBC did a 27 hour coverage of the new year from around the world.

Gywn in Kent, that's lovely seeing at least part of the first sunrise of the new century.

Greetings to our Australian/New Zeland cousins. Thank you for sharing your memories.

Take care all
Very best wishes

I was sitting on the phone most of the night talking to family, wondering about 32 year old sister who was in a coma, she spent 6 months in hospital. She had everything ready for the celebrations for her husband and two children (aged 2years and 4 years) when she was suddenly taken ill Christmas week and and never saw ant of it. Ten years on she is still recovering.
Happy New Year everyone.

Hi Elizabeth,
Have just found your thread.
Hubby and I ( My Husband and I sounds like someone else!) were in a little town in the south of Ecuador, on the border with Peru.
We have a lovely photo taken of us both as the sun was setting(over the sea) at the end of the day, the year and the Millenieum.
Later we watched as at the end of each street effigies were burnt. These were made of straw and fully clothed. Beautifully made, one an aeroplane--huge , even one of Maggie Thatcher,it was not because they disliked her, infact it was an honour, to be so re-created. There were many Tele-tubbies to be seen. the programme had just reached them. A memorable time. Where have the last 10 years gone?

I was at a black tie dinner with my OH and another couple that was held in an old pub in the wheatbelt of W.A. which is all that is left of a small country town about twenty miles from where I live. A trainload of people from Perth came out for it and a lot stayed overnight at the pub. There was a very large crowd and everyone was in evening dress. The dinner was held in a big covered patio, The tables had lovely flower arrangements and all the ladies had sparkly tiaras and the men had black and white striped cardboard boater hats to wear.
There was music and a dance floor and plenty to eat and drink and we did a lot of dancing. It was a beautiful warm night with a clear sky and stars and the time just flew. We were almost the last to leave and I drove home about five o'clock and we had breakfast at our friends place and it was broad daylight and starting to get hot by the time we got home. It was the best New Year's Eve I can remember and the world didn't come to an end or all the clocks stop on the electronic gadgets
