I never use cheques, havn't for years. If OH has to pay someone by cheque, he gets the Building Society to issue one. The grandchildren like to see hard cash in their cards. They are a pair of mercnaries when it comes to money.
However, just as some of the older genereation are getting used to them instead of paying for everything in cash, now they want to do away with them.

The thing is when everyone was paid weekly in cash, how many were heavily in debt then?

If I pay my coucil tax on line although they have the same bank as myself they still charge me extra using my bank card (the same fee they charge for a credit card) I think a lot of people get ripped off.

With cheques you get a receipt and fill in the stub a lot of people don't keep account of payments made with their bank card. The banks say they will save a lot of money by discontinuing the cheque. If it's been good enough for 350 years why change it.

It is purely for the benefit of the banks. All the time theyw ere able to hold a cheque before clearing it (for up to 5 days) they could make money by investing it. Now that there is a law saying they can't take that long to clear they can't make money out of cheques so they want to phase them out.

Stray, it is OK paying by cash but if you have a biggish job like new windows done that can cost a couple of thousand, the small contractors don't take cards and no way am I travelling from town with that amount of money in my purse. They also reckon that people will be more vulnerable because they will be tempted to keep more cash in their homes.

Another point - plastic seems easier to counterfeit than cheques.
Anyone can use someone elses plastic card number to buy thngs off the internet. When you by something and give your number - how do you know the person on the other end is honest?
Those of us willing to wait a little longer and pay by cheque are much less likely to get ripped off.

Perhaps they should give statistics - the % of people who use plastic who have had their plastic used fraudulently against the % of cheque users who have been ripped off.

I went through Drive thru KFC today ....sign saying we only accept CASH.

By October 31 2018, nowhere will accept cheques. That's the date that they will be phased out.

Not everyone uses a card!
If you buy something on a 'buy now, pay over 9 months', how do you pay them if you can't go into a shop?
The glory of the 'buy now, pay over 9 months' is you can pay varying amounts, depending on your outgoings that month - and you can't set up a direct debit for that.
You could set up a standing order, but it's a lot of faffle if you want to change the amount.

On the 16 man panel that put forward this proposal, 12 were from big banks, so personally, I think the panel was more than a little biased!!

I think they should stay.I like to give my grandchildren a cheque for Christmas, not the same putting it into their bank. I also send a cheque if I want to support a charity, I am not sending my credit/debit card security code in the post so if I have not got a cheque they wont get anything. What about tradesmen like the small building contractor who does odd jobs, he doesn't take credit/debit cards?

I can't remember the last time I used a cheque.OH likes to use them still though.We leave the milkman a cheque every week.
