Hi

The only bit about it all that annoys me is when someone puts a *public* tree on Ancestry with incorrect information!! I've recently contacted someone there with my ancestors in his tree and given him the correct information.......but will he correct it?........no!!

It annoys me because I don't have my tree on there and at some time in the future (if it hasn't already), a newcomer to the hobby is going to see his tree and copy all of his incorrect info......and thereby perpetuate the error.

Moan over lol

Here’s an example how records can get corrupted.

A parish burial record gives a man’s name as Matthias.
A note says that the certificate was incorrectly written as Mazies
The GRO typed page gives it as Maziec

A bit like Chinese Whispers!

I think thats a bit harsh Ronald.....Yes there are some name collectors. But the vast majority of us are simply researching our own trees, as best we can.

When putting names to our trees. Whether this comes from BMD, census or info from someones tree. Its down to the researcher to check that the info added is as accurate as possible.

Just can’t quite get my head round why peeps moan about other peeps trees, if you are happy with what you have on your tree and think all info is correct why moan about others, there is no guarantee that any info you have is 100% correct, peeps make mistakes on certs, censuses and all types of documents, so what you believe to be fact my well turn out to be untrue a false statement added to a document to save face at the time.
When you have a tree like mine of over 4000 which as taken around 6 years to grow, you are bound to find mistakes, but that not a worry, as and when these mistakes are highlighted you just correct them.

You dont have to give people info! They cannot copy unless you give them access to your tree.
The answer is DONT until you have confirmed the link, then send jus what is appropriate

Ah, Ronald - you are learning! I found myself married to my own second cousin, and mother of his two children - whilst at the same time married to the man I do remember marrying, and mother of his four children. Concurrently! That makes me a bigamist!

When I am asked to give access to my tree, I first ask how they think they are related to me - then, (IF they answer, and they don't often do that), I send them all the information I have on the person who is the common relative. More later, if they require it.

I have been caught. Gave access to someone who copied incorrectly - then gave access to others, etc. etc. I woke up when someone was supposed to be related to ME, yet copied info regarding my husband's ancestors too. How can they be related to both sides when I have done the research and found no connection until my own marriage?

Apparently my greatgrandmother was dead and buried some 30
years before her time, and her husband had a total of 3 wifes !!!
how do I know this !!!! because my contact told me they had all the proof
from 3 seperate censuses !!!!!! and we all know how accurate that is,,dont
we ?? lol
and some peeps show their rellies born up to 7 years either side
of
their actual birth years !!!!!
Unfortunately not every one on GR is commited to the facts
My pet hate are the people I send umpteen messsages to
who then read them but no reply !!!!!!!bloody rude

ps I gladly share my hard earned info to relies, it must be nice to sit back and have it all done for you,,,rant over lol

Its a shame that a large number of users of this site are not "researchers"
but just "copy"other peoples trees.
I was just given access to a tree which showed the Arthur *** as
BROTHER to his Mother and SON to his Grandmother, who died the year before
his birth ! .
No attempt had been made to check the info and it was plain that "Grandma"
didn't have her 10th child the year after she died or that she died in "childbirth"
