Once again, these were very good and I managed to get round and see several of them. At least this year they weren't melting away but couldn't be left out as mindless idiots would try to smash them and cause damage to others or property with lumps of ice so they would all be removed during Sunday evening.

The Orford Cellar was one of my old haunts and I saw Jimi there as well as some of the others mentioned.

Ice sculptures will wow crowds in Norwich

The ice sculptures return to Norwich this weekend.

18 December 2009 19:54

Amazing ice sculptures depicting historic events in Norwich, such as Jimi Hendrix's legendary performance, will be going on display tomorrow.

The Ice Sculpture Trail will be bringing Christmas cheer to families across the city and beyond as they view the shimmering sculptures, which are hand-carved from 10 tonnes of ice.

There are a total of nine sculptures as well as a short film about their creation, which will be shown at The Forum between 9am and 4pm, and live carving in Castle Gardens.

The event, which has been running for five years, is being supported by the Evening News' sister paper the EDP, the Geoffrey Watling Charity and BBC Norfolk, and its theme was developed by the Norwich Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART).

The carving of a couple ballroom dancing, which will appear on Ber Street, was inspired by the fact that a popular dancing venue stood at the site from 1904 until 1942 when it was destroyed by the Norwich Raid.

The Jimi Hendrix carving, which will be on Timberhill, was inspired by his 1960s performance at the Orford Cellar; a venue which also hosted performances by Ginger Baker, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Elton John.

The footballer carving, to appear on Brigg Street, represents the Church of England Young Men's Society, which is the oldest football club still playing in Norwich.

The first children's television star to have his own programme will appear as another ice sculpture, this time outside The Forum on Millennium Plain. Richard Lewis Hearne, who was also known as Mr Pastry, played a bumbling old man with a walrus moustache and a trademark bowler hat.
