Hi,
just wondering if anyone on here knows or is related to a Edward Joseph Woodall born in Manchester in 1896 and died in Dun Laoghaire hospital in Dublin in 1962, story to-day in Star including photograph of him in uniform.
Story, An English Victoria Cross Hero buried in Dublin is to be honoured by ex-service personnel from both sides of the border in a special New Year ceremony.
Joseph Edward Woodall was born in Manchester in 1896 but died in a Dun Laoghaire hospital on Jan. 2nd 1962.
He is buried in Dublins Dean,s Grange Cemetery and on 2nd Jan ex-service groups from both sides of the border will unveil a memorial on the graveyard wall.
The money was raised by the groups and a large contingent from Ireland is expected to attend.
Woodall won Britian,s highest medal for bravery in April 1918 following a desivice action at La Pannerie in France.
After his platoon came under fire from a German machine-gun he single handedly rushed the gun capturing it as well as taking eight prisoners.
He then led his men in attacking a stratigic farm house, capturing a further 30 prisoners and commanded the men after their officers were killed.
An organizer said that this is the first time that an English-born V.C. hero has been honoured here in Ireland(Republic).
Maybe some rellies might see this.
Lily.
A very brave man.

Hi Lily,

Wonder if there is a link to Trinny Woodall's family. I just read about her on Wikipedia, after googling the name. (Her real name is Sarah-Jane btw)

Hope you are ok, Lily and had a nice Christmas

love
Lizxx
