This is going to turn into an interesting debate. To me, the potatoes cooked by Budgie's method are called saute potatoes. Raw potatoes, on the other hand, sliced not too thick, and dipped in batter then fried, as they do in some chip shops around here, are called fritters or scollops. Raw potatoes, again not cut too thick, and fried, WITHOUT the batter, are called flat chips
Well, that is the potato legend, as I know it. But then Budgie did try to tell me how to cook Brussels last week. Moui. I mean, I could out cook Gordon, Jamie et al.
Being seriously, it is possibly the difference in name occurs because of different regions. Like bread cobs, barm cakes and bread rolls etc.

You are right about the name changes in different areas Julia. We call them tatie fritters, with or without the batter.

I remember my uncle who lived in Cheshire came to stay with us. He went into a bakery up here and asked for barm cakes and they hadn't a clue what he was on about. I had to tell them he meant bread buns.

Ah,I see,I call those round chips. My kids used to think they were really special,I don't know why they taste the same.

I thought that I was the only one left to make my own chips, and I still use my 30yr old chip pan.
