Hopefully, weather permitting, I am going for morning coffee at the garden centre on Sunday, as I am beginning to suffer from 'cabin fever'. I will pick up plentiful supplies of wild bird food, for the little darlings.

I don't think bread is bad for them but if it is dry it can swell up inside them. I soak mine in some water first. But there is not a lot of energy in bread for them which is why fat, cheese and fruit is good.

Aww :((
I bet there will be a lot of birds and animals wont have survived.

I buy (cheap) apples and throw them out, have done this for years. This way they get some liquid along with the fruit. Not all birds like apples though, so have a big seed thingy hanging in a tree....have scraped some snow away and out cereal & bits of bread out for other types.

Whilst emptying the fruit bowl this morning of everything that did not get used over Christmas, I decided to chop up an apple to throw it out for the birds. The plethora of visitors this had bought to my patio table is unbelievable. Back to the kitchen window to keep watching

I have fed my crowd this morning, and replaced the ice with some fresh water. Within an hour the water was frozen solid again, so I have now placed the large dish of fresh water on a block of polystyrene to see if it will stay liquid a little longer.

The blackbirds are being so argumentative - fighting over the smallest scrap when there is lots for all.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 8 Jan 2010 10:37

Don't feed too much dry bread though, seeds are best and fat balls, meal worms for Robins, blackbirds will eat scraps and like dried fruit and cheese as well.

As you say Marion, it is most likely that those birds that look fat have plumped out their feathers for warmth.

Wild birds are hard to overfeed, once their crop is full they will head for a sheltered place. Otherwise, in the Autumn when seed is plentifull, most would be too heavy to fly.

MarionfromScotland Report 8 Jan 2010 09:38

I've noticed what looks like fat birds but I was sure it's because the fluff up their feathers. If you watch them you will see.
I wont put jam on their toast....jst incase they are fat lol

A fox had visited my garden overnight, clearing the leftovers, so the birds were queing up this morning, did not even wait until I came inside before swooping down to see what was on offer.

Soooo glad someone has mentioned this!! Love the response that their birds are so fat they can't get off the ground. Made me chuckle!!

Have hung more fatballs and sprinkled Meel worms under the hedge and put more food in the food hanger. It is sooooooo difficult with water as if freezes so quickly.
