Hi Can anyone throw any light on the name "Miggs" my husband had an aunt known by this name - is it a nickname - a shortened version of something else or indeed a name in it's own right? Please help. Jacqui

Oooh Jacqui - the dreaded nickname!
I had an aunt Nell - real name Alice, g grandad Sidney - real name Gifford,
g gran Amelia - real name Agnes etc etc.

However, judging from the many names my family call me - Miggs could be Margaret.

I would have thought either Margaret or Marjorie, but you never can tell with family nicknames.

Have you thought about Mignon? I know it's an unusual name, French origin I think.

Had to chuckle about this one,
a member of the family was called Margaret, but was always known
as Fanny, a dear older Great Aunt who was profoundly deaf, would insist on calling her Sally.
You can guess the confusion this caused !!!!!!! lol

Could it be a nickname for Michelle?

It's quite hard to determine. As mentioned above, some people are known by their middle name, but quite often they are known by a name bearing no relation to their own.

In my family, for example......

We had several Elizabeths - known as Lil, Betsy, Bessie, Betty, Eliza, Lizzie.
Charlotte May was only ever known as May.
Dorothy became Doll.
Another Dorothy became Doff.
Mary was Polly.
Agota became known as Agnes.
Agnieska changed to Pat.
Frederick was always known as David.
Harold changed to Bill.
But William was known as Will.
Lily Iris became Iris.
And Lily-Maud became Lilian.
And Cole was always called Colley.

It's a wonder we ever manage to get our trees done!

We have a Miggs in our family. She is Welsh and her full name is Morphyd but is always known as Miggs. Is this a possibility?

Oops sorry! - the name is spelt Morfydd. Wrote the other reply without looking up the spelling on my tree. Is this any help, Jacqui?

I think there is a name mignonette but I expect it was just a made up nickname so you may never know. Was the Aunt too young to be on the 1911?

Never heard of it and it could be nothing whatsoever like her proper name - however, if it relates to the real name, my guess would be Margaret.
