my husband's grandfather and greatgrandfather and some of their siblings were also surgical instrument makers, I don't have a lot of other info, but someone once suggested that the Cutlers livery company may have more info

bizarrely when he died in 1935 my husband's grandfather had had a change of career and was a painter and decorator, so presumably automation had meant a lot of the older craftspeople no longer had work

it would be a real coincidence if we were talking about the same family, but my lot were all Millers (originally Muellers and from Germany)

much the same as any tool maker I should imagine, though perhaps a little more intricate? He would be the one probably crafting steel to make the scalpels, tweezers, and other instruments used in operations.

My great grand father was shown on all his census returns to be a surgical instrument maker. Does anybody have any information on what this work would have entailed ?
