Hi Guys & Gals,

I know the tree here is pretty basic...but it does lack some pretty crucial tools (abilities)

The problem I have is that I have to move the line up 1 generation.
But the software doesn't allow this.

Father with 2 marriages.
And a son from second marriage

BUT!....I have the second marriage down as the marriage of the son...but its not...it the second marrige of the father, then the son.

Should be:

Father - marriage 1 - marriage 2

Son from marriage 2.

But i have it:

Father - marriage 1
I
Father - marriage 2 (the father as son to himself)
I
Son from marriage 2 (his son is now a grandson rather than a true son)

I need to transfer the second marriage back to the father and delete
the middle marriage shown, and move up the son.

Problem is..the son is married and there is a large amount of links connected to this marriage.
So moving it up means relinking all those associated with the marriage.

Any ideas?

Cheers

I'm sorry I got the giggles as it reminded me of something Nigel Hawthorne would be saying on "Yes Minister"

I can see your difficulty with the son being the link pin.
I feel that genes sometimes does not have the ability to actually sort out the marriages by dates correctly - and ends up having the second marriages before the first ones.

Can you remove the father and reenter his particulars correctly in relation to son or is he also connected to others? Can you swap particulars around with him so that they are connected correctly?

Ooooh I can see how frustrating it must be ....

Can you tell Genes what you need to sort out and see if they can help?

Mind you they can't sort out somethings at all like two brothers in one family marrying two sisters in another one lot have to be entered twice. I have so many cousins marrying cousins it just wont work on here. I have put my tree together elsewhere - and will bring it back via gedcom overiding the one on here so they will link up correctly. Otherwise my tree shows far more people than are actually on it because they are entered twice.

Persey (who is not much help really)

Hi Persey,

Yeah its a bummer...I have the sons father as his father and his grandfather....and there are many links to both.
I have tried to rearange things....but it means moving every person up 1...which could be as many as a 1000.. ;-(

I got the fathers second marrige down as a son..not his own marriage.!

AHHHHHHHhhhh!

I am seriously thinking of giving up on GR....the software is basic which is fine....until you make a mistake ..then it kills your tree and all that hard work.

Mind you I fine that this problem cannot be solved even in expsensive software.
Someone needs to make a tree soaftware where by you can drag and drop whole sections..and just cut parts out and rejoin.

But there just isnt anything like it out there...this would be a fantastic piece of tree software if someone could make it.

You would think the technowiz people could come up with something.
Look at all the stuff you can do on powerpoint and websites... some are so clever.

Mind you I worked with this chap who was an IT person - and he was having trouble with his keyboard one day - was okay though after he cleaned out some dried up noodles from his lunch a couple of days before.

LOL!.....

I'm not very software savie....but I'm ok with hardware.
I've build all my pc's over the years other than my 1st one.

Within a year of getting my 1st pc...having never even sat at one before that.
I had build my 1st pc and created my 1st website...which i am still running.!....10years +.

I have repaired 4 laptop's in the passed few months, a PS3, and a camcorder...lol.

But software...nope!.
