*****One of the most common methods used for (this) information exchange is the GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. In simple terms it is a method of formatting your family tree data into a text file which can be easily read and converted by any genealogy software program.*****

Basically - a Word doc. records text, Excell figures and GEDCOM a family tree data.

Your 'tree' on this site is recorded on a GEDCOM readable file.

You can download it to your home computer by scrolling down to the bottom of any page and follow the instructions under import/export gedcom. but you will need a compatible programme on your PC to read it.

There are a number available eg Family Tree Maker, Family Historian and free ones such as PAF available from familysearch.org, and Legacy.

GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, is a file specification for exchanging genealogical data between different genealogy software. GEDCOM was developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an aid to genealogical research. Files have the extension .ged.

All genealogical software programs have the ability to import and export gedcom files. So for example, you could export a gedcom file of your GR tree and import it to a program such as FTM, on your PC.

Hiya Bradley.... our trees already form a gedcom, basically... you should be able to upload or download your tree from here to another programme, or save it to a disc or similar...... and do the same to a tree you wish to add to your GR account... it used to take over any existing... but I think you merge them now, so you don't lose data.

Do you need to move a tree elsewhere?
