as an extra comment ...........remember the old electric fire elements?well, stretched out the wire wont get hot..............but coiled up it gets to red heat......exactly the same happens to an extension lead while coiled on its drum!!

however, the smell, if its at all a fishy kind of smell then check the 13amp plug and socket, a dirty pin or loose fuse/wire in the plug can cause that to overheat........

Coiled up electric leads whether integral to a machine like a hoover or extension lead are a fire risk! Always make sure the lead is fully extended. Is the dustbag full as that might cause machine to overheat?

I ruined the motor in my vac because I used an extension lead and no-one told me to pull out all the cable before using it. That caused the vac to have the smell which reminded me of an electric train set.Your vac might need a good clean out as cotton, hair etc does get caught up. -jl

The biggest problem if it's blocked is hair......like a fur ball in a cat.

I thought Hoovers were supposed to pick up bits???????????????

Do you mean NOT picking up bits??????????????

If the motor is working but no bits being picked up:-

Have you checked that there is suction at the end of the tube? If not it could well be blocked. Try using summat to firtle around inside the tube to loosen the blockage.

If there is suction and it's an Upright hoover, is the brush underneath revolving? NB Turn hoover over so you can see the brush and drop a wee bit of paper on it. DO NOT TOUCH BRUSH WITH FINGERS WHILST HOOVER SWITCHED ON.

If brush not working then the drive belt has bust. Cost about £8-£10 to buy new one and usually easy to fit.

Hope this helps
