Welcome to the boards Alan .

The first bit of advice I give to anyone starting, is to buy an 'Ancestral File' for about a fiver from a family history site . Its saves making lists, scraps of paper, attaching relatives to the wrong generation etc. , and keeps the information in one place.-jl

Welcome.

Some useful tips have been given to you, and I would recommend reading
the thread "ABSOLUTE BASICS FOR BEGINNERS PLEASE READ" at the top of the Find Ancestors board.

Happy hunting, and please ask for help as and when you need it.

Hello Alan

The best advice is to start with what you know and then work your way back.

Also what are you looking for and hoping to achieve.

The first thing to do is to write your own mini tree down, starting with yourself and then your parents and then work back. Any brick walls then you could put some names & dates on here,

A very good site to look up Birth Deaths & Marriages is FreeBMD.

Do not worry about any questions you ask, we all had to start somewhere and I can assure you we all asked some really odd questions and some silly or pointless ones (I know I often cringe when I think about what I did when I first set out!!!)

No-one on here bites so welcome to the site and enjoy this hobby, which can become an obsession. :-)

Welcome to the boards Alan :-)

Start with what you are sure of, parents and grandparents perhaps, and make full use of free info like Freebmd.

On here 'Finding Ancestors' board does what it says on the tin, there is always someone about to help or point you towards the right records, General chat tends to be just that, very general lol, and genealogy queries may get lost in the chatter but everyone will help if they can :-)
