Hi Margaret,

My mum often called granulated sugar, loaf sugar.

Loaf sugar was solid in solid lumps shaped like loaves, hence the names. You had to break it up and it formed a very coarse granulated sugar so using normal granulated will be fine.

A "Loaf" of sugar was a conical block of refined (more or less) sugar brought from the West Indies to Europe. Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian kitchens would keep the loaf in the pantry and scrape off what was needed. So yes, Loaf sugar is just like granulated.

Incidenttally "Sugar Loaf Mountain" in Rio is named after this.

Can anyone tell me please, Is Loaf sugar the same as granulated sugar? Would I use the same weight?
.....Was looking through my mother's old recipe books & came across this.
