Good afternoon :-)

After a few days of trying to get worrying into perspective..............

Loving Father,
My heart feels heavy with thoughts I cannot control.
I lay each burden at Your feet, trusting that You hold every detail of my life in Your hands.
Replace my anxious thoughts with Your peace, and my fear with faith.
Teach me to rest in the truth that You are working all things for my good, even when I cannot see it.
Help me breathe deeply, live fully, and trust completely. Amen.

“Who of you can add a single hour to his life by worrying?’

The Empty Chair
Jane's kitchen table had always been full—full of food, full of laughter, full of the people she loved. But now there was an empty chair where her husband used to sit, and the silence pressed in like a heavy fog.
She worried about everything: the mortgage, the repairs the house needed, the loneliness that seemed to grow heavier with each passing day. She tried to pray, but her words felt small and broken.
One afternoon, she made tea and sat at the table, staring at that empty chair. Without thinking, she whispered, “I wish You were here.”
And then, in the quiet, she remembered something her pastor had once said: “God doesn’t just hear your prayers—He sits with you in them.”
The thought was so vivid she almost reached out to pull the chair closer. She imagined Jesus sitting there, listening, not rushing her grief, not offering quick fixes, but simply being present.
Her worries didn’t vanish, but they loosened their grip. She realised she didn’t have to carry them alone.
The chair was still empty to the eye, but in her heart, it was no longer unoccupied.

“Who of you can add a single hour to his life by worrying?’

People have always suffered from anxieties, and hymn writers often had this in mind when writing new songs.

Being part of a church family provides an opportunity to share concerns and worries with others and ask them to pray too. These friendships can also provide practical support and advice.
There are many hymns whose words speak to those who are anxious and here are two favourites. There are versions available on Youtube.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

And……….

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease;
my Comforter, my All in All;
here in the love of Christ I stand.

Who of you can add a single hour to his life by worrying?’

Restless Murmurs
Restless murmurs never cease,
Or so it seems to many
Countless minutes ticking by
With little sleep, if any
Why do we worry so much?
When God says, "Give it to Me"
Why do we fret and fuss?
When prayer is the only key
For in prayer we find great release
And quietness for the soul,
We find our restless murmurs cease
Then God can make us whole.

God is not a cosmic slot machine with instant solutions. Being a Christian doesn’t erase worries, but it can provide a new perspective on difficult situations. While God hears prayers, his answers may differ from our expectations.

Jonah was a planner with everything mapped out, but when his company unexpectedly closed, he felt lost. He spent days pacing and worrying about his future. One night, he found a small battery-powered lamp in the dark hallway of his building. It lit just enough to guide his next steps.

Recalling his grandmother’s words from the Psalms, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” he realised he didn’t need to see the whole future. Trusting God for the next step was enough.

"Who of you can add a single hour to his life by worrying?"

Anxiety is a fact of life. The modern world is full of stress and pressure. Very few people are immune to worrying about something at some point in life. But fundamental to Christianity is the belief that, whatever people face, they do not need to face it alone. They do not need to find comfort in alcohol, drugs, food, shopping or a thousand other distractions. Christians believe that God loves humanity and wants to have a relationship with everyone.

Part of that relationship is talking to him by praying – and asking him to help with issues which concern us.

Collect (special prayer) for today:
Almighty God,
you have created the heavens and the earth
and made us in your own image:
teach us to discern your hand in all your works
and your likeness in all your children;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things,
now and for ever.
Amen.

Today, in the Gospel reading, we hear about Jesus telling us not to worry about tomorrow.

In a small village, there lived a gardener named Asha who dreamed of growing the tallest bamboo forest anyone had ever seen. She planted the seeds, watered them daily, and tended the soil with care. Weeks passed. Then months. Still, nothing broke through the ground. Neighbours began to whisper, “She’s wasting her time.”
But Asha kept going—watering, weeding, and believing.

Five years later, tiny green shoots finally appeared. Within just six weeks, those shoots grew into towering stalks, reaching high into the sky.

When asked how the bamboo grew so fast, Asha smiled and said,
“It didn’t grow in six weeks—it grew in five years. All that time, it was building strong roots beneath the surface, so it could stand tall when the time came.”

Moral: Patience isn’t waiting and doing nothing—it’s nurturing your dreams quietly until they’re ready to bloom.

Good morning :-)

Have Patience
Be still, my soul, when storms arise,
The Lord who shaped the earth and skies
Knows every tear your heart has shed,
And walks the path where you are led.
The seed must rest beneath the ground,
Before the bloom can yet be found;
So faith must wait through shadowed days,
Till dawn breaks forth in golden rays.
His clock is not the one you keep,
His wisdom runs both wide and deep;
Though prayers seem met with silent air,
His love is working, always there.
So trust the hand you cannot see,
The One who holds eternity;
For in His time, all things made right—
Your waiting crowned with morning light.

Simeon wasn’t the only person waiting for the Messiah to be brought to the Temple – there was also dear old Anna. Said to be around 84 years old, she had lived there since she had been widowed after just 7 years of marriage.

Anna is noted for her unwavering devotion to God. She spent her days and nights in the Temple, engaging in fasting and prayer. This dedication highlights her spiritual commitment and the respect she commanded in her community, especially as a woman in a patriarchal society.

Her presence in the Temple during Jesus’ presentation shows important truths about faith, patience, and the rewards of a life dedicated to God. Anna inspires believers with her steadfast devotion and recognition of Jesus as the Messiah.

We thank God for the lives of Simeon and Anna, for their patience and devotion. We have a lot to learn from them.

Waiting! Who doesn’t hate waiting for something? Have you ever waited for something so long that you almost gave up hope? Maybe you’ve prayed for an answer, a breakthrough, or a change, but nothing happened. If so, you’re not alone.

On Sunday, we heard about dear old Simeon. who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. Simeon waited for this event. And he waited. And waited. Simeon had no idea when it would happen, but he trusted God’s word.

And then the day arrives……Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and praises God: “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel”.
Having seen the Messiah, Simeon is now prepared to die.

Today is Candlemas.
Candlemas is a day that celebrates events that happened 40 days after Jesus was born. Jewish families would go to the temple in Jerusalem to perform rituals as required by Jewish law. After giving birth, mothers had to go through a purification process, and firstborn sons were dedicated to the Lord.

Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus travelled from Bethlehem to Jerusalem for this purpose. When they arrived, Mary would wash in water to be considered "clean" after childbirth. At the temple, they followed the law to dedicate Jesus, offering a sacrifice of two doves or pigeons, which was what poorer families used instead of a lamb.

This situation shows the irony of Jesus being a poor family's son who would ultimately become the lamb sacrificed for everyone's sins.

The Collect (special prayer for today)
Almighty and ever-living God,
clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple,
in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

Today, we celebrate Candlemas and the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. We will hear about it in our Gospel reading.

Good morning :-)

Lord Jesus,
I come before You with an open heart,
weary from walking my own path,
yet longing for the truth that only You can give.
Shine Your light into my darkness,
break the chains that hold me back,
and wash me clean with Your mercy.
Teach me to trust in Your love,
to follow Your voice above all others,
and to walk in the way of grace and peace.
From this day forward,
be my Saviour, my Shepherd, and my Friend.
I give You my life, my heart, my all.
Amen.

From Shadows to Light

I walked in the valley where silence was deep,
Where burdens grew heavy and sorrow would seep.
My heart was a lantern with no flame to show,
A wanderer lost, with no place to go.

Then softly, a whisper broke into my night,
A voice like the dawn, warm, steady, and bright.
It called me by name, though I’d never been known,
And offered a love I could never outgrow.

The chains that I carried fell down at His feet,
The weight of my failures no longer my seat.
Grace wrapped around me, a garment so pure,
A promise unending, steadfast and sure.

Now I walk in the sunlight, my soul set ablaze,
Each step is a hymn, each breath is His praise.
For once I was blind, but now I can see—
Christ is my life, and He’s living in me.

Conversions to the Christian faith...........

Ayaan Hirsi Ali the Somali-Dutch-American writer, made news in 2023 by converting to Christianity after being an outspoken atheist for many years. She had previously criticised religion and founded organisations for secularism and women's rights. Ali now sees Christianity as a source of comfort and cultural value, describing it as a refuge from despair in her essay for UnHerd. Her conversion sparked strong reactions from both atheists and Christians around the world.

Conversions to the Christian faith are ongoing...
.
Alister McGrath The Irish biochemist, embraced Marxism and atheism as a teenager in Belfast during the violent Troubles. His Oxford studies unexpectedly revealed Christianity’s intellectual depth rather than confirming its irrationality as he expected. McGrath’s scientific background led him toward faith instead of away from it through careful analysis. His conversion shaped his career as a theologian and critic of Richard Dawkins. He now bridges science and faith through academic apologetics and numerous books.

Yes, people are still converting to Christianity.....................

Peter Hitchens is a British journalist who initially adopted atheism and leftist views like his brother, Christopher, in the 1960s. However, while travelling in Europe, he began to appreciate Christian art, which changed his perspective. After a personal crisis in the 1980s, he converted to Anglicanism after much reflection. Hitchens wrote "The Rage Against God," responding to his brother's views and critiquing how secularism affects society while backing traditional Christian values.

Yesterday, the vicar used the alternative readings so, instead of hearing about 'fishers of men', we heard about the conversation of Saul on the road to Damascus.

Conversions have been going on ever since........

Albert Henry Ross, an English lawyer who wrote as Frank Morison, initially sought to challenge Christianity by questioning biblical miracles using his rationalist approach. He aimed to disprove Jesus' resurrection through research and investigation. However, by the 1930s, his thorough examination of the evidence changed his views, leading him to belief instead of scepticism. His book, *Who Moved the Stone?*, recounts this transformation.
