When The Shard’s display turns on, the top 20 storeys of the building will become a festive fiesta, composed of hundreds of light installations. 2019’s display has been designed by local schoolchildren, and features three different sequences – each nine minutes long, they’ll appear every half hour from 4pm until 1am. They have, however, been testing them for the past few days, so you may already have caught a glimpse of them.

Putting schoolchildren in charge of the designs should help the Shard lights capture some of the childlike wonder that Christmas inspires. For New Year’s Eve, a specially-designed display will take place in order to welcome 2020 to London, beginning at the stroke of midnight and lasting into the early hours of New Year’s Day.
