That is good news :-D

I did cool it and it hasn’t blistered, so I will live :-)

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2025 15:27

You don't say if it blistered Linda so hopefully you managed to cool it before it did.

Unfortunately, he had just made it Ann, my arm isn’t too bad now, I must have thick skin there, but my hip is still sore.
I managed to get the duvet in the washing machine, but with the water in it, it wouldn’t spin properly. It is in the tumble dryer now, so I will see how it does, I might have to buy a new one. We do have a launderette in the town, so I should have taken it there.

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2025 11:33

Oh goodness Linda, hope the soreness wears off soon. Hopefully the coffee had had time to cool or the scald could have been worse.

Oh, how painful, Linda! Not a good start to the day!
I hope it eases soon.

Thank you for looking AG. Knowing that it is Church Hill is good, I thought that it was called Main Street. I have seen the Francis Frith picture and the post office list. I haven’t been able to find it in 1939 either. I found the telephone lists, but without a name you can’t search them. Putting Reighton in doesn’t work, because it is a Bridlington number. Unfortunately OH’s sister doesn’t know who these people are

. A couple of weeks ago, she sent us an Acme thunderer whistle which had a tab on it with his mother’s name on it , a date and the word Referee . I managed to find that it was from the girls high school which she attended at that time. That lead me to some newspaper reports about a school Shakespeare play which she was performing in. One of the reports actually had a photo of the cast. Unfortunately the scan was so black that you could only see a couple of people. We will have to make a trip to the records office in that area to see if we can see the original.

I am rather sore this morning, OH always brings me a coffee in bed and somehow between us, he managed to tip it all over me. My hip and arm are very sore :-( I am currently washing all the bedding including the quilt , not what I wanted to do on a Sunday morning

I'm side-tracking onto research here!

Reighton comes under Bridlington in 1939 Register .

Here's a 1960 photo of the Post Office, apparently:
https://www.francisfrith.com/reighton/reighton-post-office-and-main-road-c1960_r239075

Those buildings are still there, on Church Hill - or at least they were there in 2023, which is the date of the last Streetview image.

In 1939 Church Hill isn't named as such, but the houses are named individually.
Some of the named houses are on Zoopla, and their addresses show they're on Church Hill.

However, I don't see the Post Office listed in 1939 - though it may be obscured in some closed record, perhaps.

Some dates re Reighton PO here - though confusing:

Good afternoon from an extremely cold Yorkshire.

We did have a nice meal last night, thank you Florence. The food was really nice and we will definitely go back. Luckily they had put us in a bit of a side shoot, so it was quieter than the main part. Unfortunately they had forgotten to take Esme ‘s ear defenders, so she was getting upset about the noise. She liked wandering around to the entrance part and looking at us through a little window, so her parents took turns in doing that. She normally isn’t that bad, I think that it was just the noise.
We went back for birthday cake and she was fine once she got home.

I went out this morning to help my daughter by taking a parcel back to the post office for her for an Amazon return. I got the bus there, then had a mooch round the town. I was going to get the bus back, but it only runs every half hour and I had just missed one, so I walked back. It is only twenty minutes, but it was really cold, so I was glad to get back.

I have spent the afternoon trying to find out information about a photo which OH’s sister had out in his birthday card. She thinks that some relatives used to live there, but she doesn’t know who. It looks like the 1960’s. It is of Reighton Post Office near Bridlington. I can find it in earlier censuses, but nothing after 1921. I thought Ancestry and lots of telephone directories, but I can’t get any results to come up for Reighton

:-(

Hope you hubby had a lovely birthday Linda and the meal out was enjoyable.

Its pretty awful here weatherwise as has been all week. I have rubbish for the recycling bins but its far too windy to venture out as I might get blown over!

Very quiet here as home alone until later so shall potter about doing some housework and theres a basket of shredding with my name on it too lol

Hope everyone else looking in today is keeping warm.

We do have a Tesco express in the centre of Knaresborough, but being small, it doesn’t carry a very large selection of items, so it doesn’t have the prunes.

It is OH ‘s birthday today. He came with me to Esme’s school bakery this morning, mainly because we had a parcel to return at the post office near her school. We came back via the retail park because we need to collect our prescriptions from Boots. He actually said that he wanted to look in a clothes shop and he bought two tops and a pair of trousers. That was a miracle because normally getting him to look for new clothes is impossible. He also bought a new anorak last week, he must be I’ll :-D

We are all going to an Italian restaurant at 6 pm, a bit early but Esme gets tired if we go out much later. After that we will go back to their house for birthday cake complete with candles. I think that Esme has a large “ It’s my birthday” badge which she is going to make him wear in the restaurant

Remembering from a holiday some years ago, there's a Tesco Express at Killinghall, just north of Harrogate - but they may not have as big a range of products as a full-scale Tesco.

It's always so good to catch up with old friends.
One of my neighbours moved to Shropshire last year, and I do miss her.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 16 Jan 2025 19:22

They can keep their cold snap, we had enough last week.
This afternoon, I went back to Thirsk to have coffee with my old neighbour. I really miss her, so it was good to catch up. I took the opportunity to to buy some new artificial flowers for my parents ashes grave. The flower shop there sells little bouquets which all come from one stem. I have a spare metal grave vase which goes into the hole on the top of the grave, so I put the new flowers in and swap it over when I go. I bend the stem though the central hole and wedge it so it can’t come out. I found that if I have individual flowers they blow out in the wind.
I also went to Tescos as we don’t have one here. OH likes tinned pitted prunes in juice and Tescos is the only place you can buy them. They sell small tins which he uses over two days. He only has them on Saturday and Sunday, so the twelve tins I bought today will keep him going a long time.
For whatever reason, Harrogate refused to have a Tesco supermarket, but they have finally given in and one is being constructed at the moment, so in a few months, it will be easier for me to get them

Its supposed to come 24 Jan! I just read a piece from the daily express.

I agree there is a lot of scaremongering but this map keeps appearing on line showing most of the uk covered! :-S

I couldn't find a weather warning either AG.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Jan 2025 13:35

Not much wind here. Very overcast, but supposed to stay dry, so I have risked hanging out some washing.
Now keeping a close eye on the weather and keeping my fingers crossed!

Yes, the days are definitely stretching. Thank goodness.
Before I retired, I used to look forward to the middle of January, as that was when it was daylight when I came out from work at 5pm, instead of still being dark.

I don't believe the panic-mongering online threats of all that snow.
Neither the BBC Weather website, nor Accuweather, are warning of more than possible slight snow or sleet, well into February and beyond.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Jan 2025 13:02

That was a nuisance Florence, it is always disruptive having to wait for somebody to call. Hope she gets to you today.

I have not seen that forecast, don't look forward to bad weather again, we have had enough.

Florence61

Florence61 Report 16 Jan 2025 12:12

Afternoon all
its blowing a gale as it has been all week and raining so have not ventured outside.

Daughter managed out to the bins but only because she went to town on the bus.

Tuesday afternoon about 4, I rang my nurse to see where she was and she apologised and said her clinic had run over and therefore couldn't come! She said if she finishes on time today, she will try & make it for this afternoon and if not def next Tuesday.

I'm not a happy bunny as it means after wasting Tuesday afternoon just waiting, im now in the same position today. It means I cant start something as don't want to be in the middle of it should she turn up!

But..... i should be grateful she is able to make a home visit as on the mainland, i probably wouldn't get the same level of service being a smaller rural area up here.

So I will find something smaller to do and be patient.

I see on the news another "Beast from the East" is on its way for most of the UK except for our little corner. I so hope it doesn't come again as i think weve all had enough snow already this year so far.

Hope everyone else looking in is ok and keeping warm.

Roll on the spring as I have already noticed a small difference in the days stretching
