Editing shared family trees

Good morning to whoever sees this! I hope you are all well.

I've just been shared a family tree from my first cousin once removed, where I am part of it. When I go on my profile, it says this is My Tree. I want to create my own family tree from the information in this one as I can't edit the information in the shared tree.

How do I do this?

Thank you so much!

Welcome to the boards, Megan.

It's best to create your own tree from scratch, checking facts as you go, rather than just copying someone else's, as they may have made mistakes.

However, if you do want to copy another tree - you can't.
Years ago, it was possible to copy/paste details , one person at a time, but not now.
You'll just have to take note of the info on the other person's tree and then type it into your own tree.

You've entitled your query "Editing shared family trees" - but as you know already, you can't edit someone else's tree.

I don't understand your sentence, "When I go on my profile, it says this is My Tree."
Incidentally, your cousin shouldn't have your, or any other living person's, details on his/her tree unless he/she has the person's permission..

I don’t understand ‘my profile’ either.

When you choose the Family Tree option at the top you should see three options - My Tree and 2 gedcoms options. If you click on M y Tree I assume you get a blank page as you haven’t done one yet. In the centre at the top there should be a ‘view other trees’ option. This is where you will find the link to any trees that have been shared with you. Obviously there is only one at the moment.

If you really want to have your own editable copy of your cousin's tree, it occurs to me that you could ask them to email you a GEDCOM file of their tree, and then you can upload it into a new tree of your own, after which you can edit it as much as you like.

"How do I import or export a gedcom file?
If you want to load your gedcom file onto the site, click on the Family Tree button at the top of your homepage, then select Import Gedcom from the drop-down menu. This will take you to the import gedcom page where you can upload your file. You can only load one gedcom per registration. It may take a whilke to load, depending on the size of the file. We'll send you an email once it has loaded.

If you want to export a copy of your tree then click on Family Tree at the top of the page and then choose the export option. Your tree will be emailed to you as a gedcom file attachment. If you don't receive it within 24 hours it might be worth checking your spam folder in case it has been added there."
