Thought. i would treat myself to a new tub as my very old tub was nearly empty.

Bit taken am back by Sainsbury’s as labelling says it is for soda bread and gingerbread :-S :-S :-S

Then found the baking powder says it is for cakes, scones and meringues. - not quite so odd.

I wonder if newcomers to baking get confused and try to hunt down the ‘right’ one ;-)

I do believe it’s always been like that. I buy both ;-) ;-)

I’ve always had both but this new bicarbonate, in big letters, says, in big letters, it is for the soda and gingerbreads. If one didn’t know better it might put some people off.

For culinary purposes, I probably don't use bicarb for much else, maybe sticky toffee pudding.
Baking powder mostly.

My foolproof standby ginger cake requires bicarb.

I haven't used baking powder for anything for years.

My oven flour scones require baking soda and cream of tartar. Dont really use baking powder very often

Ah, you see I use baking powder in scones. And it's handy to have in just in case I run short of self raising flour, I can 'top up' plain flour.

Florence, that is an example of why the labelling could be regarded as confusing.

It looks as though it is only Sainsbury’s that puts the (not so) helpful advice on its labels.
