I need to clean some very old expensive antique silver. I don't want to use silver polish in case it is too abrasive. Any ideas anyone? I've tried white toothpaste, baking soda and aluminium foil in water mixed with salt and baking soda on my own silver but this is for someone else and I am a bit worried I might damage it. Lemon or Lemon Juice will clean silver,gentle rub then hot soapy wash rinse soft polish,, try using washing soda and aliminum,,not baking soda it doesnt react with aliminum or cigarette ash will clean aswell,,,wash soft polish,,,,,,,, Dont use Silver Dip,,,,on Antique Silver,,,,,it spoils the bloom,,,,,,,,

The foil should not harm it,

Hi Aileen Source: Readers Digest Hints and Tips from Times Past 4 teaspoons salt 4 teaspoons baking soda 1 litre water Add salt and soda to the water. Soak the silver for 10 minutes. Rinse each item carefully. Dry thoroughly with a clean tea towel. Polish with a chamois leather. Dianne xx

Good point Jan, some silver looks best with bits unpolished. Would be a good idea to ask a silversmith or shop that sells silverware. Don't have a lot of family silver, only a teapot we used to keep stamps in and that has a dent lol

An antiques dealer might know about such things.
