Was a special Vancouver Day in King's Lynn, Norfolk, the other day. George Vancouver was born in King's Lynn in 1757 then a bustling wealthy port and his well to do family were intimately involved with the maritime trade. His father, John Jasper, was Deputy Collector of Customs & Port Dues in the Custom House and in time his brother John would also take that position. His voyage round the world to chart the Pacific coast of America (1791 - 1795) is regarded as the most arduous survey any navigator has undertaken. The exhibition will introduce you to the world of George Vancouver through pictures, storyboards and a reproduction of his Great Cabin. Go back in time to 1793 when Captain Vancouver is mapping the North-West coat of America. See his Great Cabin where the Captain and his officers worked and the botanist is carefully recording the flowers and plants of this unexplored region. There will also be a fine collection of Vancouver commemorative china for sale. Very collectable. Of particular interest and surely seen for the first time by most visitors are the fine ethnographic artefacts from Polynesia and North West America brought back by Vancouver and his officers. We hope to borrow some significant items from the British Museum. The image above is an oval bowl with lid, hand carved designs in relief, from the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia |

We had a great day! We took our Australian friend to visit the tourist places in town. Had lunch in Gastown, went to Stanley Park, but never did make it to Granville Island because it was soooo busy. Home now for a BBQ. Deb |
