porphyria is im my family. my mum was diagnosed with it in 1964 and had previously been treated for a mental breakdown!! my brother ,me,and my daughter also have it. during an attack the urine goes red,we have terrible stomach cramps also suffer with nerves!! my mums uncle had it and her brother died from it after having a general anaesthetic for appendisitis. its not a pleasant thing and there are so many things we have to avoid. alcohol, barbiturates, aspirin ,the list goes on. there are a couple of different porphyrias,we have variegate and acute intermittent porphyra there is a good website hayley with info. http://www.porphyria.org.uk/links.htm orphyriasusie

it is hayley lol. but weve learned to live with it. when mum first had it she was extremely ill and for 3 yeras she was being treated for mental illness.it wasnt until the dr asked her what colour her urine was that they then realised she wasnt a hypocondriac. she was rushed to hospital and within hours she was in a coma. the medication that the dr had been giving her for the past few years had made her very ill. simple meds like sudofed, neurofen can set an attack off. whilst suffering with shingles all we could take was paracetomol. when mum had her stroke last year we had to get a list of meds from cardiff univerity, faxed through to the hospital so that they didnt give mum the wrong thing. the nurses hadnt heard of it ewither lol. susie
