Some 55 years at school, I made friends with a girl from Wales. Because she had a 'funny' accent, she was shunned by the others. We were never in each others pockets when we left school, just kept in touch, occasionally made up a foursome with lads. She then met Ken and became engaged, I met my husband to be and got engaged. We promised to be each others bridesmaids but when we came to setting the date we found that we were to be married on the same day. We kept in touch through the years, the odd phone call, birthday and Christmas cards etc. I moved, she moved but still the phone calls and cards continued. THEN...two years ago I had a phone call from Ken asking if I would go and see them. I duely made arrangement to go the next week but two days later Ken phoned my other half asking him to come with me. No problem. Two days later Ken phoned again and told my Peter that he did not want us to go as I was a stuckup bitch, I was Mrs. Bucket, that I flashed all my crystal under their noses etc etc. I was too good for them, and we were not to go to their house. This was a friendship that was distant, but strong. We met only twice over a 15 year period so I was so taken aback by his outburst. A week or so later I had a card from my friend just saying that Ken was going through a rough patch and she would telephone and update me soon. The call never came. Yes I was very hurt, as I said this was a strong friendship in the true sense of the word, we did not have to meet to be/stay friends. Aniversary and Christmas I still sent cards, but no response. THEN yesterday early evening the phone rang, Peter answered it and was chatting away merriely. He scribbled on a piece of Paper, 'Its Pat and Ken'....... When the call ended he said that it was Ken appologising for his previous acctions and would I phone Pat that evening. Well I did. I acted as if the past two years had not happened and gleaned from the conversation we had over an hour, that they had been through a very sticky time, neighbour problems etc. they had now bought a bungalow had moved and things seemed to be on track. No mention was made by either of us of the past two years, we were two long term friends chatting. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and we are going to see them next week. I have my friend back. Oh happy day. Kathlyn

sounds like they acted very silly, but we all make mistakes. I think it is worth giving them another chance. I am glad you will get to see your old friend. I have an old friend, I let her down a few years ago, and though we still send xmas cards, I have not had the guts to write or phone her, I am afraid of rejection I suppose. Maybe after reading your post I will write to her soon. Joy

Can you imagine the courage it must have taken them to make that phone call yesterday. I have my longest friend back, even though we are not in each others pockets. Yes, yesterday was a great day. Kathlyn

Kathlyn, So glad you have your friend back. You say it took courage to take them back...It was also very gracious and forgiving of you to ignore and forget. They are lucky to have a true friend like you. All the best. Tina x

Strange that you should have this happen and add it to the board. I am very happy for you that you are now back in touch with your friends and hope you have lovely time when you meet up. I had a friend for more than 40 years and last Christmas was the first I had not received a card from her. We haven't met up so much in the last eight years due to her part time job and my health problems but did have the Christmas contact. She didn't let me know her son and his wife were expecting a baby, but she did tell me in one Christmas card that she had a grandson and I have seen the son and he showed me photos etc. Last week was her 60th birthday and so I sent her a special card and wrote a message in, saying where I was living now with my phone number and such. So far no call. I suppose she could be away on holiday for her birthday but I will wait to see whether I hear from her or if I get a card for my 60th next month. So far as I am aware I have done nothing to upset her. It is sad when you lose touch with folk and nice to have them back in your life. Liz

Hi PP The many things we have to remember (1) least said soonest mended (2) life is too short (3) Do as you would be done by. I am sure there is a reason for your friends delay in contacting you, after all we all say, 'I must do that tomorrow' then something very important turns up and the contact is put on the back burner until 'tomorrow' I sincerely hope your friend does contact you. Thanks Kathlyn, I am going to try and get her son's number from where he works or make contact with him there, and find out if she and her hubby are ok, if I don't hear by the middle of July, which will give her time to get back from a holiday. I sent her a card when her mum died and a note and she didn't respond to that either. Must have just gone off me, there wouldn't have been that many cards for her Mum as she was very very old and there are few relatives and my friend doesn't have a huge network of friends, especially any that knew her mother.
