Do any one know of a connection between the Pithouse family and the Read family, on 1861 census, Thomas Pithouse of London is listed as Bar Keeper of the Star Inn in East Woodhay Hamp. and Elizabeth Read born Gt, Yarmouth 1827 and James Read born 1857 in Hoxton London as his niece and nephew. she is listed as housekeeper, and no wife is mentioned on the census form Shirley Hayes

Hi Shirley If you look on the 1851 census you will see that Thomas Pithouse is married to an S Pithouse and there is an unmarried servant E Reed a servant born in Yarmouth. This is probably Elizabeth. It says aged 2 but is probably mistranscribed and should read 24. I can't imagine a 2 year old servant doing much housework:) A Sarah Pithouse died in the right area in 1860. This is just a guess but I wonder if Elizabeth had a baby by Thomas and as he was married at the time of birth he may have passed them off as Neice and Nephew after his wife died. Chrissie

You are very welcome Shirley. Don't forget that it's just an assumption though. I tried to find a birth for James but there were too many possibilities to be sure which was him. His birth certificate would have been interesting. Probably mother Elizabeth and no father listed if I'm right. Chrissie

Most likely right Chrissie, his marriage certificate didn,t have one listed, that is why we had so much trouble, and so many James Reads , couldnt even find the right Reads in Yarmouth, but it has to be the same Elizabeth, and he would hardly have them down as his niece and nephew, unless he wanted it to look good, Thanks Shirley

I hate to bother you again Chrissie, but the 1851 census for Thomas Pithouse, is it at the same place, Star Inn in East Woodhay Hampshire, so I can find it, Thanks Shirley
