Its always been there but was always kept as tabboo subjects. It is now spoken about more by all of us and we are all more educated of these things happening. The only difference is now these poeple have more resourses to use to get up to these activities and can prey on people over a people from all over the world. We all need to be more watchful over our children and ourselves. Jax xx

I don't think so Joy. Crime has in fact gone down over the last few years. I think the media make us so much more aware today and we also live in a much more open society. There have always been child abductions, child abuse etc., pornography, serial killers etc. etc. and according to statistics these sort of crimes have not increased over the last 25 years. I think what is worrying is the nature of crime among some young people with wanton vandalism starting at a very young age, and the knife and gun cultures which appear to be springing up in some communities. I believe that all the things you have mentioned always been a part of life but through the modern media we are more aware. My concern is that we become desensitised to it all. Susan

As these issues all arise from human 'weaknesses', they have always been around, (see the history of ancient civilisations) - but all incidences were not recorded, so we have no idea how prevalent they were. Jay

Joyous You are quite right. Until 1929 - that is less than 80 years ago - there was no legal age of sexual consent for boys or girls, so the crime of child sex abuse simply did not exist. Doesn't mean it didn't happen - just that it wasn't considered a crime. OC

Child abduction is still very rare - that is why it always makes the headlines. The main abuse threat to children is still in their family circle. This rarely makes even a local paper, let alone the headlines. OC

I agree it is that we are more aware of these things happening--mind it seems everytime we put the news on there's been a murder, I can remember someone being murdered near home in the early 70's and it was a shock sensation--I think we are desensitised these days by the media and by programmes on TV Carol

Think thats it has always been there but not so rife to what it is nowadays.Today there are so many people on drugs.I remember when i was about 10 going into the park in the 6 weeks holiday with a few friends. We all were sitting inside a ring of trees. We noticed a man standing behind a tree watching us.My brother had a paper round about 13 and was delivering to a tower block.A bloke got in on one floor and started touching my brother.Brother pressed the lift for the next floor and jumped out and jumped all the stairs.Jumped the wall at the bottom and slipped and broke his arm. There were perverts then Annie

Child abduction by a stranger was possibly rarer back then, simply because people didnt have cars! Incest has always gone on, usually with a child, and against that child's will. But it was hushed up, never spoken of, either by the child, or by the family if they knew what was going on. Incest came under Church law, not common law. I think the apparent rise in child sexual abuse is due to the victims having more confidence in reporting the crime, and more likelihood of being believed, than an actual increase in the crime. There were dirty old men around when I was a child, including teachers. None of us ever told an adult and we were lucky that we were not, for the most part, seriously harmed. Of course, the internet has played a big part too. Men who may have suppressed their paedophile tendencies because they lived in a small community and were afraid of the repercussions, now have access to material which panders to their filthy interests and makes it seem not such a terrible crime. I read somewhere once, that 10% of adult men have paedophile tendencies. If that is true then it is horrifying - we ALL know at least ten men to speak to. Hopefully, some of them are able to control these tendencies as they are caring enough to know what terrible damage they could do. OC

Unfortunately the age limits of films/videos only applies to public viewing, buying or hiring. It does not prevent them from being watched in the home, either with or without adult consent. Jay
