Tina, it sounds as if your smoke alarm makes a real racket when the battery is getting flat. Ours merely chirp about once a minute. At least when I realise what it is in the small hours I can then turn over and go back to sleep. The first time it happened I was very sleepy when it woke me. I wondered what sort of bird it was. Didnt sound like our morepork (native owl). I decided a nightingale would have a better tune than just that cheep (not that we have nightingales in New Zealand.) I then decided it must be a nightjar. I was just dozing off again when I sat bolt upright (well not really). I have heard of them but we dont have them in NZ either! The silly things that come into your mind at that time of the morning!

Huia... spot on........ Strange as it may seem.........an explanation... A Batteries.' output is dependent on temperature.........while it is warm its voltage is higher..when it gets cold it drops......there fore in the middle of the night, IF the Battery is borderline, it will sound the Lo battery alarm then....... i staggered down stairs half asleep and pulled the battery out and just prayed that there wont be a REAL fire until i replace it. o h thought the burglar alarm was going off ( not a lot of difference when you are woken at that time and cant quite make out what is going on!) tina x

Perhaps because most people are at work at 2pm and wouldnt hear it. I also wonder if the cooler night weather helps it to beep.
