Just a quickie.....how do you test if they are real....

Take them into bright sunlight. perfectly matched real pearls cost a fortune so if there are slight differences in colour they are more likely to be real Gwynne

Just found this sally, hope it helps Rub the strand across the front of your upper teeth. It may sound strange, real pearls will feel rough or gritty while fake ones will feel smooth. This is due to the micropores found on the genuine article. xxLynnxx

That's answered the question then - just rubbed Granny's pearls over my teeth and the coating is coming off - pearls that is....not pearly whites.... the others.....there is a long string of a couple of hundred small pearls, slightly different colours....but smooth again, and no sun to test them - but I doubt if they are real...... thanks for the tips.....

That's exactly what I am doing at the moment Lynn.....just going through odd bits of jewellery from my Mum......she wasn't much for jewellery, so it is costume stuff.......but I remember she did have pearls that her Mum had and they have silver wire between them, so I thought they might be genuine......also, only 6 pearls with a pearl drop at the end......but never mind, they are of sentimental value anyway........the others my Gt. Uncle gave to my Mum saying that they were real, but he could 'spin a yarn' as my Dad would say..... So I have a box with beads, diamontes, coloured stones etc. that I will keep for my granddaughters to play with when they come round........we used to collect and swap beads in the playround at school.....and I sometimes wonder, if the rings that sometimes appeared in the boxes, might have been the real thing.....

my gran was a right character, a bit of a floosie in her day, and she always had lots of jewelery, all fake, but i remember going round when i was a child, and her letting me try it all on, and her putting a bit of lippy on me Oh happy days, bless her xxLynnxx

I can remember collecting and swapping beads at school. I wonder if they do it now, don't remember my daughter doing it. Ann Glos
