Magistrates court

I have just returned from the magistrates court after hearing the outcome of a case brought by my Parish Council. Our clerk, over a period of some 16 months, stole a LOT of money, and this is money that belongs to the public where I live. We were very pleasently surprised to hear that 'This case is far too serious for this court to deal with, as the maximum sentence that we can inpose is 6 months in prison'. So they have refered it to the Crown Court where the penalties are much higher. BUT, as is the way.......Because our prisons are full, she will get away with a slapped wrist!!!!!!!!! Part of me is pleased that the magistrates were aware of just how serious the offence is, but knowing how lenient 'proper' judges are, she will walk with just a few hours community service.....Watch this space. At one time theft of public money brought an automatic prison sentence but, as you say, not any more. let's hope that it is published in your local newspapers because sometimes the public shame is more punishment than community service. Hopefully she will have to pay back the money if she has it. Ann Glos
