Didn't see the need to lie - wrong info on census has given all of us a lot of hassle but I refused to put British as my nationality and entered English as did all of the family.

Donna, the grandmother of my great uncle by marriage was just the same. Deborah Dawson, a widow, was on the 1881-1901 records, no problem. Could I find her in 1871? Not a chance. Neither could I find the son (grt-uncle's dad). So I did a Christian name search for one of the kids, and found a Deborah South, 'husband' James, kids named South. I cross-reference with the other records - what do I find but Deborah as head of house with James South as lodger. I wonder if there was a misunderstanding when 1871 was collected - it was assumed that they were a married couple, perhaps.
