Middle Aged Spread. I shall be 53yrs old in December and although I 5am ft 9in tall, I have always been a skinny person throughtout my life. I have terribly thin legs and it has been a constant worry since childhood, and still worries me now. I have been a constant 10st 5lbs for years but now 11st 4lbs. Ok, I did go up to 12 stone with one of my four children, but lost it quite easily soon after. During the winter I have put on nearly a stone in weight. I am most annoyed as it has not gone where I wanted it to go, eg, my face and legs. Just all around my waist and hips. I am eating a lot more regular meals, but not fatty ones, have stopped drinking Cider only have wine now lol. So what has caused me to put weight on? Is it just Middle aged Spread? Jenny. |

Jenny I think it is a middle aged thing, and hard to deal with. I stayed the same (over)weight 13 st 5lb ish for 2 years and then from last October to Christmas put on another half a stone and now vary between 13 st 12lb and 14st 2lb. I suppose it is due to the fact I am even less active than I have been, but even when I was rushing round all the time in my late 40's early 50's I put on weight, my neighbours used to say they couldn't understand why I was increasing in girth and weight when I always seemed to be dashing here and there. I do spend a lot of time sitting here and don't sleep well, which I think could be a contributory factor, but how do I get out of the circle and lose the weight, I could not manage weightwatchers meetings and such as no energy to get there, and difficult with o.h. on shift work etc, also I couldn't afford it and wouldn't be able to do the right food while trying to do meals o.h. wants. I have turned into my mum, apple shape and all, and she ended up with diabetes and angina, and had three heart attacks before she died! So sorry, Jenny, no answers or ideas, just hope you stay as well as you can despite the spare tyre. Liz |

I did read somewhere that, with females especially it is to do with hormones. I know I put on weight when I was on HRT and it didn't come off after I finished taking it. In my 20s to 40s I was always a size ten (5ft2.5) and weighed under 8 st 10. Now a 14/16 and weigh 11 st. And it is mostly around my middle (tummy, waist and midrift). And if I drink wine Jenny I put weight on. (I should say when I drink wine) Ann Glos |

I've been told by the medics it is normal to put on weight in the winter - about half a stone - which has happened to me for many a year, I then lose it in the summer. Exercise could help even just a brisk walk every day, this, combined with healthy eating might do the trick. I lost over 2 stone (when I started with diabetes) just by cutting out pastry, cakes, crisps etc and of course no junk food or takeaways. Hope this helps |

I've put a stone on too Jenny since July last year... I think alot of it is down to the fact that I went back to work in an office full time and just don't get the same exercise. I'm tired when I get home and the last thing I feel like is exercise. At least hubby loves me this way (was actually bigger when he met me) but I don't want to gain any more weight. Your gorgeous anyway Jenny... wish I was a slim as you. (((((((( Hugs )))))))) Gaynor xxx |

If you have just put on weight around your middle it would be worth getting your blood sugar levels tested as this can be a sign of pre-diabetes. |

It is so unfair that if you are unwell and therefore unable to exercise the weight sneaks on and won't go, no matter how much you try to cut out fattening, and nice, foods and drink. I was just reading something about lack of sleep disturbing the body's metabolism, leading to weight gain. Must be why I am so big now! |
