A few years ago I was on holiday in skeggie, and used my other account card (with no overdraft as it was for holiday savings) I went over by about a tenner, but diddnt realise as I bought something direct debit from a shop. I thought the transaction wouldnt go through if there was insufficient funds (I had a credit card once that rejected a debit as there wasn't enough funds to use) I was wrong. a week and a half later I returned home to find three letters from the bank, with charges totalling £90. The next morning I went to the bank and asked to see someone in charge. I was treated like a naughty schoolgirl, and I pleaded them to drop the charges. (I had the money in another account to settle up straight away) I had been a customer since I was four years old. Id never owed the bank a penny, but it was all jobsworth, and they insisted I should have checked my accounts balance in a hole in the wall. (I usually go online but I was on holiday) No goodwill gestures, nothing. I sat crying in the bank, I was so upset. Had Id been at home, I could have rung them when I got the first letter and put a stop on any more charges. So they could have dropped at least the last two charges. I'm still banking with them as its easier as ive got my direct debits coming out from them and its easier than mucking around and changing as present. By the way my bank is The Halifax... The banks cannot charge more thatn the overdraft they are breaking the law.demand your money back...which bank was it??xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx((((((:

they are not allowed to charge more than £12. I TOOK MY BANK TO COURT OVER THE CHARGES AND WON.

Just one word of caution, and I believe Martin Lewis also mentions this. After paying out all this money, the bank may issue you notice to close your account. So, do have an alternative up your sleeve. Otherwise, go for it.

You can claim back up to 6 years . Ask the bank for all the statements with overdraft charges for the last 6 years . They may try to charge you but you can also claim this back ( charge usually £10) . I received £951.00 last month so yes it is worth bothering about . But hurry up Watchdog says a time limit to claim is to be imposed soon .

Go in to your Bank and stand there and let fly at the first bank employee you can grab and SHOUT at them very LOUDLY and so everyone can hear. Believe you me they will cancel that charge and any others. Done it, It works best of luck, xx Bob

Have a word with your bank about dropping the charge. I was overdrawn by £6.00 (GR cashed my cheque weeks after they extended my membership, I thought they would cash the cheque first). My bank waived the charge. Failing that definitely have a look at the Martin Lewis website. My friend has just had £1,500.00 refunded from her bank through Martin's website information. Go to the Martin Lewis web site, money saving expert(.) com he was the one who told everyone how to fight bank charges. People got back £1000's. Remember to remove brackets. Good luck Pat

Complain,Complain and KEEP complaining!! If you persevere you will get it back, the banks are in huge trouble about charges at the moment. also check your bank statements for any other charges you have paid out,go back as far as you can, you can get those back too,but like I say,you must PERSEVERE!

Daylight robbery, thats what it is. In our local paper last week was a letter from a lady who has parked her car, for the last five years, for just 10mins once a week whilst she delivered charity things to a local shop. A few weeks ago she returned to her car to find it had been clamped......The guys were standing there waiting for her to return and they demanded £200 to release it. She did not have that amount on her so one of the men drove her to the bank so she could withdraw the £200. To say she was a little miffed is putting it very mildly. I only hope that the blood suckers that carry out this form of vandalism are kind to their old mums!!!!! Kathlyn

if you phone them up and be put through to the complaints department they will normally drop the charge as long as it is not a reg thing by going overdrawn they tried to charge me over £80 last year and i phoned and complained they then dropped all the charges try it

go to the bank tell them your situation and explain how hard things are for you the bank will wavier xxx

Seriously! How can they justify that?! My husband was made redundant 7 months ago so we need the money more than them.

Google ...there has been an uproar with bank charges of late and how you can reclaim your money.
