Aspergers was identified by Hans Asperger 1944 and recognised by the WHO in 1991 affects 10 to 1 males to females. It is a disorder effecting social relationships and communication. A few of the problems faced are fear of change, language skills and difficulty in understanding social behaviours and rules. Let’s look at language first, the art of conversation is a problem and understanding from both sides of the conversation is difficult. One should never assume an Aspie (name for a peep with Aspergers) has understood because usually they haven’t. They then get frustrated trying to tell you as they have problems expressing themselves. So it is a no win situation. Thus never try to argue as you will lose the battle from the start, as an Aspie has no desire to please anyone. Aspies do not tend to be tactful and tell the truth, thus making it difficult for them to make friends so they become unpopular….imagine if you were told you had bags under your eyes or you looked old, you would not like it I am sure. Never use sarcasm, irony or a metaphor as it will not be understood and taken literally. So if you say for example ‘pull your socks up’ they will do just that literally, this can lead to some comical situations but at other times not so. Aspies need structure and control in an environment ie the house where they feel secure, one must set and impose acceptable behaviour as a norm. Last but not least for this bit is the understanding that an Aspie has to be asked if they have understood what you are trying to tell them, then you have to check that has been understood, never assume it has and never think because they have said yes that that is true. I will look at other aspects mentioned above at a later date. Hope it helps towards understanding and feel free to make positive comments so we may share information.

Thanks Puss, my grandaughter is autistic and , as you say she lives in a literal world. If you say it is raining cats and dogs she would look out expecting to see cats and dogs! Our new Vicar is from Uganda and when she met him,she said,Are you black all over? When she saw his children she said O your children are black as well! You never know what she is going to come out with! As you say, sarcasm or jokes are lost on her, she sees everything literally. Gwyn
