In my family tree research I have come across the sinking of a ship The Empress of Ireland. She was lost in the St Lawrence river in 1914 with the loss of 1,012 lives which was actually more than the titanic - yet very few have heard of this disaster . The ship was hit by another in fog. An interesting fact is that it was the Ship's captain's first voyage as a captain. When the captain was an officer on another ship he was instrumental in the capture of Dr Crippen after befriending him. When Crippen was arrested he cursed Kendall the officer and this happed - well I found it interesting ! |

to be honest I have never heard of it either but then it wasnt made into a film like the titanic. My mum sailed from New Zealand to England in 1933 on the Rangitangi (sp) and it was the first ship to be torpedoesd during the war. She said she found that very upsetting. |

The other 'famous' disaster was the Lusitania. |

It's amazing what catches the public's attention and what doesn't. I was surprised that you had so few responses to this thread too. Just goes to show what interests people, doesn't it? |
