Has anyone here been sent on one from there GP, I have been refered to do a course, mine involves doing exercise in water, similar I'm assuming to water aerobics. I just want to know how you got on if you've done one? Gillie |

interesting... Do you have to pay to go to the local pool then or is it on the NHS? I joined a gym for 6 weeks last year and there were aqua-robics classes. |

LLC, According to the pamphlet the GP gave me there is a 'patient charge' for the programme, I don't as yet know how much it will be. Gillie |

Hi Gillie, I used to be the instructor at the gym and the pool for GP referals. Most Leisure Centres give a discounted 10 - 12 week membership with reduced or free entry. They will set you a progressive programme and see how you go from there. Good luck. Tina x |

Hi Tina, thank you for that info, I am quite looking forward to doing it, it's got to be better than suffering pain constantly, I'm hoping it will make a difference to how I feel, I'm hoping I won't feel so down about how I generally feel. Gillie. |

I am sure the exercise will be beneficial in some way. Will probably make you feel better about yourself generally. Good luck Wonder if my doctor uses this method. |

Hi Beryl thank you, I will keep you all informed as to how it all pans out, I'm starting a diet tofday too as I really don't think my weight helps the problems I have with the arthritis. LLC, the only way to find out is ask your GP, it can't do any harm to ask, I'm sure most GP's offer this sort of treatment, after all it must save on the amount of treatment people need if they don't exercise and get fitter, I think a lot of my problems are through the fact of having FM and arthritis. Gillie. |

Oh dear Puss, I'm sorry you feel so uncomfortable, I'm afraid my weight has to come off as I have high blood pressure and the osteo in my feet is worse due to putting on over a stone in the last year. I will lose it and see how it goes, I need my blood pressure down as it worries me, strokes run in the family and I don't want to have one. Gillie. |

Gillie, I have had a GP referral to the local leisure centre. I will be using the gym. I am slowly recovering from depression and he thinks exercise will be good for me and help me gain some confidence and be less stressed. I have been today for an assessment and my fitness programme has been created. I go on Monday for my induction and a 1:1 with my personal trainer on how to use the machines and how to work through my programme. Keep your fingers crossed I don't look to much of an idiot !!! My doctor referred me for the scheme because of my diabetis and blood pressure. Its a 12 week course - twice a week - cost £5 joining fee at the gym and £2.20 each session, and at the end of the 12 weeks I can take out membership to the gym at a reduced rate of £20 per month. I am halfway through and it is great, I have my own personnal instructor who is watching me and advising me,but not pushing me. I belonged to a gym 2 years ago, but I am coping far better under this scheme, and I feel great when I come out, I workout for one and a quarter hours each session and yes I am overweight. I am breathing better and hills and stairs are getting easier and easier. I really do recommend going on the scheme if offered. Brenda |

Yes it's called 'active life' round here. I was referred by the hospital, not the GP. Ours cost £2.50 a session, that includes as long as youwant in the gym and a swim. Am on a 10 wk course, tho have been told it can be lengthened if instructor thinks it's a good idea. I am on active life as i have a bad knee, that been operated on twice. |
