If our area manager pays us a visit we dont get a tea break cos we are usually only there on a 4 hour shift. Well today I had 4 1/2 hours with no break but to make matters worse she has decided we work faster if we stand up so now I have had to stand all that time wiht out a break. REally some employers expect blood out of a stone.. Its only a check out job. LOL |

It wouldn't do for me.I did check-up and did not have a chair one day.I ended up having a week off with a bad back. Annie |

Sounds like a breach of H&S regulations to me. I'd follow it up |

I dont mind but its the attitude that we will work faster if stood up. Well if there is always a queue why dont they have an extra member of staff onthe checkouts. Oh no that would cost too much.... We get paid by the hour but if you start at 9 when the shop opens they expect you to be there 15 minutes before, and if you finish at 5.30 when the shops shuts no way are you out of there on time. You have to wait for the manager to lock away the tills etc. So if you added up all the extra time I am sure they would owe me another 2 hours pay each week |

Oh Little Lost Cousin, how I can relate to your thread!!! I worked on a checkout at one of these pound stores (just to earn an extra crust). If we worked 4 hours we had no break; stood up all the time too. If we worked 5 hours we had a quarter of an hour break; 6 we had 2 quarter of an hour breaks; over than and then.... wait for it - we could also have half an hour lunch break (unpaid). Talk about slave labour...!! |

we only get a 10 minute break but thats only when the area managerss is around.Nobody likes he and you have to share the office with her if you want a cup to drink so I think it has become a tradition not to have a break when she is there. I honestly dont see how you can work faster stood up after 4 hours with out a break.... |

Why the big thing over a Area Manager? this makes me annoyed cos in my eyes no one is any lower or higher than you, unless they have HRH in front of the name. In my eyes he/she gets in her knickers one leg at a time like you. I work in head office and we have a chief executive who pops in/out occasionally but to us lot hes just Dave no higher no lower, we dont bow to him or anything hes really just a down to earth person. Somethings wrong somewhere and I think by law you are entitled to a break, needs looking into that. Yvonne x |

we have no staff room and she is always in the office on the phone next to where we make our drinks. She sometimes even locks the door so even if you fancied having a break you cant make a drink. |

All we had was a pokey llittle room off the stock room, just room enough for two people and a kettle and a sink.... |
