The tenths part is simple - you've got that. The first number after the decimal point relates to 10ths the second number to 100ths the third number to 1000ths etc. going up by the power of ten each time - in other words multiplied by ten With something like 9/20ths, you look at the bottom figure. It's too much to 'go into' the first decimal place (10) - so you move on to the next decimal place - 100ths. Now 20 goes into 100, 5 times. Because you have multiplied the bottom figure by 5 to get a hundred, you have to multiply the top figure by 5 too to keep things equal. So that then makes 45/100. If we had 1/100 as a decimal it would be 0.01. There are 45 of them so it equals 0.45

So easy when you explained. She is now writing it down in the back of the maths book. She said 'is that all I have to do?' Really appreciate the help - it was getting a bit stressful here,. Selena

Converting a Fraction to a Decimal Do the following steps to convert a fraction to a decimal: For example: Convert 4/9 to a decimal. Divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator (e.g. 4 ÷ 9=0.44444)

Doesn't 9/20 Become 0.45? (Thats if it's out of 1) Or if you want it out of 10, it's 4.5

there is a web page that will help, i ripped this bit off it!! [Home > Try another problem like this one] OK, so there's a few steps to set up here in order to convert 69/30 into a decimal. First off, we'll interpret the fraction bar to mean 'divided by.' This means that 69/30 is the same as 69 divided by 30. Second, you have requested to see 3 decimal places in your answer, so we'll write the 69 as 69.000 instead (a 69 with 3 zeros after the decimal point). Now, we'll just do what the fraction bar says: divide 69.000 by 30: And that's about it! 69/30 written as a decimal to 3 decimal places is 2.300. its missed out the long division workings....... Bob

there are two ways to do this one is old fashioned long division the other is easy with a calculator- you just divide the first number by the second ie enter nine press divide then twenty and you have your answer in decimal form jackie in wales OH

9/20 multiply the top by 5 and the bottom by 5 (in this case)[The object being to make 100 on the bottom, and use the same number to multiply the top with} 40/100 thus 9/20th becomes 0.40
